[SOA] PAHR: We need your help!

Dear SOA Members,

 

Over the past couple months; the listserv has received many updates from
Jelain Chubb, State Archivist at the Ohio Historical Society involving
advocacy initiatives to pass H.R. 6056, The Preserving the Historical
Record Act (PAHR).  If PAHR is passed on the federal level, up to $1.7
million dollars from a total of $50 million dollars will be appropriated
to Ohio.  This bill would provide funding through grants to over 5,000
local governments and 1,000 archival institutions in our state for
projects and initiatives to strengthen archival storage and
accessibility, policy development, preservation measures and so forth.

 

At this point, two Ohio legislators, Charlie Wilson (6th District) and
Tim Ryan (17th District), have agreed to support this bill, but more
sponsorship is needed to get this bill passed.  On August 12, 2008, SOA
Council unanimously agreed to support this bill and will be contacting
legislators in Ohio to gain their support.  Now, we need your help. More
support from archival institutions and archivists is needed to get the
attention of legislators.  

 

Many SOA members are under the impression that the only step they can
take is to make a phone call.  This is not the case.   Below are some
actions you can take to aide in passing PAHR:

 

*         Fax a letter of support to your local representative

*         Have your interns and graduate students write a letter that
details how PAHR would benefit their future growth as archivists

*         Tell your colleagues and friends about PAHR and encourage them
to contact their local representatives

*         Place signage and handouts within your institution for public
view

samples letter to send to representatives.
