Action Alert!!!

Vote Needed on NHPRC reauthorization at $20 Million

We are making good progress on having the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) reauthorized at the increased level of $20 million. Thanks to your efforts, the House Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census, and National Archives passed reauthorization at $20 million for NHPRC on July 1. Now the full committee, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, must pass the same reauthorization. With only a few weeks left in the session, now is the time to contact the full Oversight Committee to ask for a markup on HR 5616. We need a big push from all of you to ensure that this reauthorization makes it out of the House Committee, at the $20 million level.

The Senate passed its version of the NHPRC reauthorization bill on July 12, but at the $10M reauthorization level instead of the $20 million. The Committee needs to hear from us, so that they will know how important it is for NHPRC be authorized at $20 million. Please contact your member of Congress, if he or she is on the Committee, and ask the Committee vote on and pass HR 5616, NHPRC reauthorization, as reported by the Subcommittee, at $20M.

The members of the full Committee are listed below, with a link to each member's website with contact information. Please contact your representative by email, fax, or telephone, and ask him/her to request that Chairman Towns put HR 5616 on the agenda for a Committee vote.

Points to make in your call, fax, or email:

. HR 5616 reauthorizes the National Historical Publications and

Records Commission (NHPRC) at the funding level of $20 million, and was reported favorably from the Information Policy, Census, and National Archives Subcommittee.

. Please ask Chairman Edolphus Towns to hold a vote on HR 5616 in the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

. Passing HR 5616 will significantly improve the condition of and access to the American historical record through grants from the NHPRC, the only federal agency that provides grants specifically for archives.

. NHPRC is a good investment of federal dollars. All grants provide a 50% cost-share in local funds. NHPRC grants often serve as "seed money" to start archival programs or activities.

. NHPRC stimulates jobs in the archives and records management

profession. Historical records projects are "jobs-heavy." On the average 75% of NHPRC funds for projects are used for staff salaries.

Provide information on why NHPRC is important to your region/state/institution, or tell a personal story about your use of a record or its importance to you.
