*UNIVERSITY ARCHIVIST AND COORDINATOR OF SPECIAL COLLECTIONS*



 The University of Dayton Libraries seek an innovative, collaborative, and
service-oriented professional to serve as University Archivist.  The
primary mission of the University Archives is to preserve and make known
the history of the University; other special collections include the
general rare book collection, the Congressional papers of Charles W.
Whalen, the Si Burick collection (sports memorabilia), the Catholic Civil
Liberties Union papers, the Julien M. Christensen collection (psychology
and human factors), the Glenn R. Walters collection (Dayton-area business
history), the Michael Polanyi collection (philosophy), and several
performing arts collections: the Dayton Bach Society collection, the Karl
Flaster West collection (opera and poetry), the Urban Schnurr collection
(theater), the Josephine Schwartz collection (dance), and the Victory
Theater collection.



The University Archivist oversees the acquisition, processing, use,
security, and preservation of physical and digital materials for the
University Archives and Special Collections.  The Archivist takes a
leadership role in developing and preserving digital collections, and in
developing an institutional repository in collaboration with other units
across campus.  Additional responsibilities include: consulting with
university offices and organizations on the disposition of records; working
closely with University Advancement, especially Public Relations and Alumni
Relations; representing the Archives and University Libraries on various
committees.  The University Archivist supervises a full-time staff member
and one or more graduate interns.



Required Qualifications:  M.A. in public history or M.L.S. from an
ALA-accredited program with formal training in archival theory and practice
and knowledge of historical methodology; a minimum of two years post-degree
full-time experience working in an academic archives; supervisory
experience; demonstrated ability to work in a team environment;
demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse user communities;
knowledge of and experience with digital access management software such as
CONTENTdm, and Institutional Repository software such as Bepress Digital
Commons; knowledge of archival management software such as Archivists’
Toolkit; knowledge of and experience with descriptive standards such as
DACS, EAD and Dublin Core, as well as markup and stylesheet languages such
as XML, XSL, and CSS; knowledge of file formats used for preserving digital
information; excellent written communication skills; commitment to the
University’s Catholic and Marianist mission and identity.





Preferred Qualifications:  Experience with archival management software;
experience with rare books; training in/familiarity with preservation
standards and practices; supervisory experience with full-time staff;
excellent oral communication skills; grant-writing experience;
certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists.



This is a full-time faculty position (non-tenure track) with the rank of
lecturer, reporting to the Associate Dean for Collections and Operations.
