LYRASIS' Thomas Clareson Awarded the George Cunha and Susan Swartzburg Preservation Award by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services

Atlanta, GA - February 21, 2014 - Thomas Clareson, Senior Digital & Preservation Services Consultant at LYRASIS, has been awarded the George Cunha and Susan Swartzburg Preservation Award. Established in 2007 by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), the award honors the memory of George Cunha and Susan Swartzburg, early leaders in cooperative preservation programming and strong advocates for collaboration in the field of preservation. The award, sponsored by Hollinger Metal Edge, acknowledges and supports cooperative preservation projects and/or rewards individuals or groups that foster collaboration for preservation goals. Recipients of the award demonstrate vision, endorse cooperation, and advocate for the preservation of published and primary source resources that capture the richness of our cultural patrimony. The award recognizes the ongoing leadership and initiative required to build collaborative networks designed to achieve specific preservation goals. Since collaboration, cooperation, advocacy and outreach are key strategies that epitomize preservation, the award promotes cooperative efforts and supports equitable preservation among all libraries, archives and historical institutions. This prestigious award honors its recipients for a lifetime achievement of collaborative work in preservation.

Thomas Clareson, known by his colleagues as Tom, has 20 years' experience in preservation and digitization services. Formerly a representative from the Society of American Archivists to the Joint Committee on Archives, Libraries, and Museums, he currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Heritage Preservation, the national institute for preservation and conservation advocacy. Throughout his career, Tom has consulted and worked with all types and sizes of academic and public libraries, archives, museums, and various other cultural heritage institutions. He has successfully conducted more than 200 site surveys covering preservation, digitization, and special collections-related issues. Tom holds an MLS from Kent State University, an MA from Ohio State University, and a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University.

"We are honored to have Tom on our team, providing high-touch, high-impact consulting and expertise that our members and so many in the community need to preserve, maintain and enhance their collections and improve their operations," stated Kate Nevins, Executive Director of LYRASIS. "Tom, along with his LYRASIS colleagues, has cultivated many relationships and offered real-world tested solutions over the years, helping make LYRASIS a well-known advisor for libraries and cultural heritage organizations on many helpful topics, including preservation, digitization, digital preservation and program planning. This award epitomizes the spirit of Tom's passion and dedication to preservation throughout his esteemed career."
