Budget Update

Congress Finally Passes FY18 Federal Budget
Note: Just before this email was finalized, President Trump threatened to veto the bill<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=edacac2eee&e=994dc209a0>. We will update you further if the legislation is not signed into law.

On March 23, Congress approved a $1.3 trillion omnibus appropriations bill that will fund the federal government for the remaining six months of fiscal year 2018 (FY18). Across the board, history, archival and education programs were either level funded or received small increases. This should be considered a major victory, since the president had proposed eliminating the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and other programs.

Our full coverage of the FY18 budget can be found here<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=d5aaede605&e=994dc209a0>. For a quick overview of how programs of interest to our community fared, take a look at these two charts, which compare the final FY18 numbers to the last two years and to the president's original budget request:

  *   FY18 Final vs. FY17 and President’s FY18 Request<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=ddf0116a74&e=994dc209a0>

Highlights include:

  * A funding increase of $3 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities, which the president had threatened to eliminate, bringing its total funding to almost $153 million
  * A $9 million funding boost for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, from $231 million to $240 million, the first significant increase it has received in several years
  * Substantial boosts for history programs at the National Park Service, including another $13 million for the Save America's Treasures program (up from only $5 million last year) and $16 million in grants from the Historic Preservation Fund
