The 21st annual Western Archives Institute will be held at <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">San Diego</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">State</st1:PlaceType>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">San Diego</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">California</st1:State></st1:place>,
June 17-29, 2007. This intensive, two-week program provides integrated
instruction in basic archival practices to individuals with a variety of goals,
including those whose jobs require a fundamental understanding of archival
skills, but have little or no previous archives education; those who have
expanding responsibility for archival materials; those who are practicing
archivists but have not received formal instruction; and those who demonstrate
a commitment to an archival career.<br>
<br>
Dr. Elizabeth Yakel has agreed to serve as the Principal Faculty Member for the
2007 Institute. Professor Yakel is an associate professor in the <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">School</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Information</st1:PlaceName>
at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Michigan</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>. She is
a member of the Archives and Records Management specialization within the
Master of Science in Information program. Before joining the SI faculty,
she was an assistant professor at the <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Pittsburgh</st1:PlaceName>, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">School</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Information
Sciences</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>. Prior to that, she worked in a
variety of archival and records management settings for over 15 years.<br>
<br>
Her research interests include use and user services for archival materials,
particularly focusing on the digital realm. Currently, she is working on
several research projects including "Developing Standardized Metrics:
Towards Understanding the Impact of College and University Archives and Special
Collections on Scholarship, Teaching, and Learning," funded by the Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation and the "Next Generation Finding Aids Project."<br>
<br>
Professor Yakel has published in major archival journals including <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>American Archivist</span></i>, <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>Archivaria</span></i>, and <i><span style='font-style:
italic'>Archival Science</span></i> and is currently an editor of <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>Archival Science</span></i>. In 1999, she was
elected a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists.<br>
<br>
The Western Archives Institute will feature site visits to historical records
repositories and a diverse curriculum that includes history and development of
the profession, theory and terminology, records management, appraisal,
arrangement, description, manuscripts acquisition, archives and the law,
photographs, preservation administration, reference and access, outreach
programs, and managing archival programs and institutions.<br>
<br>
Tuition for the Institute is $650 and includes a selection of archival publications.
Housing and meal plans are available at additional cost. Admission is by
application only and enrollment is limited. The application deadline for the
