Call Dorothy at 330-972-7284 with any further questions.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>In this workshop participants will get hands on experience and instruction in some of the basic tasks of handling 16mm celluloid film in an archival setting. Precautions to both ensure damage is not done to the film and that the handlers’ safety is not compromised will be reviewed. Participants will practice inspecting film, winding film, AD strip testing, capturing basic metadata when working with film, using a 16mm viewer, and repairing and splicing film with a tape splicer. We will also review the preparation of film for projection and telecine, including demonstration of using a telecine to digitize film. By the end of the workshop, participants will have some understanding of steps involved in film preservation in an archive, a grasp of specific terminology related to film preservation, a concept of the different tools and equipment used when handling 16mm film, and an ever-so-slight introduction to film digitization. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The instructor, Bleakley McDowell, is an archivist and artist working with audiovisual material. During the summer 2014, he interned at the CCHP for credit toward his Master’s degree in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation from New York University. He worked on preserving the one-of-a-kind collection of 1910s-1940s child development films made by psychologist Arnold Gesell. He is also a founding member of NYC metal band Bloody Panda.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><i>The Drs. Nicholas and Dorothy Cummings Center for the History of Psychology, located at The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, is a unique institution that cares for, provides access to, and interprets the historical record of psychology and related human sciences.
