Published rare texts on display date from 1546 and cover the likes of Hippocrates and Galen, and take you through a four century ride of medical developments and improvements. The art comes from the Lloyd’s Vesalius Trust Collection of Art in the Service of Science, which features works from notable 20th and 21st century illustrators.

<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shape id="Picture_x0020_4" o:spid="_x0000_s1028" type="#_x0000_t75" alt="Finch_1977_Manual_0009_10_03_Heart.tif" style='position:absolute;margin-left:1.5pt;margin-top:13.45pt;width:252pt;height:247.35pt;z-index:2;visibility:visible;mso-wrap-style:square;mso-wrap-distance-left:9pt;mso-wrap-distance-top:0;mso-wrap-distance-right:9pt;mso-wrap-distance-bottom:0;mso-position-horizontal:absolute;mso-position-horizontal-relative:text;mso-position-vertical:absolute;mso-position-vertical-relative:text'>

Illustration, especially scientific illustration, teaches and illuminates for the reader in ways that words cannot always adequately describe. And, so if one picture is worth a thousand words, this exhibition speaks volumes. Many of the artworks on display feature what were, at the time of their creation, innovative techniques, new knowledge, and new methods of action, for physicians, students, and patients. And, while the subject matter might not appeal to everyone, a step back from the subject and a step forward into the beauty of the art itself is something everyone can appreciate.

Martin Finch (his work on Heart Surgery at left) was the first medical illustrator to donate his life’s work to the Vesalius Trust Collection.

About the Lloyd: The Lloyd Library and Museum, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, is a local and regional cultural treasure, which began in the 19th century as a research library for Lloyd Brothers Pharmacists, Inc., one of the leading pharmaceutical companies of the period.
