Folks,

The message below provides information on NARA & NHPRC but
also the wider universe of cultural resource programs at the
federal level that help us and many others in the broad historical
and cultural community that we know. (And note in the tables, Ohio
U. some years back had a project funded through the "Save
America's Treasures" program. And an archivist from Texas was head
of IMLS during the second Bush presidency.). I hope you find it of
interest to spend a few minutes reviewing these things.

Dear NCH members,

Earlier this afternoon the Senate passed the FY 17 omnibus
appropriations bill that will keep the federal government funded
through the rest of the current fiscal year that expires on
September 30. President Trump is expected to sign the bill later
today.

Here is a link to the story I just published on the NCH website
breaking down funding for federal history, archival,
preservation and education programs. (There are also postings on
NCH’s Twitter and Facebook pages). Across the board these
programs were either level funded or received small increases.
This should be considered a victory given the current budget
climate.

The story includes links to two charts showing how programs of
interest to our community fared. The first chart includes the
budget numbers for FY17 and compares them with FY16 and
President Obama’s original budget request. The second provides
funding trends over the past three fiscal years to give some
historical perspective. When viewed from that time frame, in
most cases the numbers actually show a general upward trend.

Feel free to cut and paste from the story to highlight the
programs of interest to your members. However, if you use either
one of the charts, please credit NCH.

Only in Washington would passing a budget seven months into the
fiscal year be considered a cause for celebration. That said, we
face difficult days ahead when the Trump administration sends
its proposed FY 18 budget to Congress in the near future. Trump
has already signaled his intention to eliminate the National
Endowments for the Humanities and Arts and the Institute of
Museum and Library Services. We can expect other programs to be
similarly targeted. So we should savor the increases we received
this year.

Thanks to all of you who responded to multiple legislative
alerts over the past year on these funding issues!

Please let me know if you have any questions.
