Open Source Software for Libraries
Open
source and free software has been around for a very long time. Many
libraries, however, are just starting to explore these alternatives to
high-cost, commercial software packages. Open Source software can lower
a library's software costs, provide for more predictable technology
planning, reduce security concerns, and offer more flexibility to users.
In the past, open source software was used extensively "behind the
scenes" and rarely on desktop computers. However, several free and
robust applications now exist that can replace commercial operating
systems, Web browsers, productivity suites, and even full library
automation systems! Join us for this overview of open source software
and find out how it can benefit your library's staff, patrons, and
budget.

Good = morning,
The OLC = Diversity Committee and Technical Services Division are looking for a = few good libraries to help us develop a fun, timely program for OLC = Annual 2004. We envision a session to guide libraries through the = steps of planning, implementing and maintaining an international = languages collection, addressing both technical services and public = services issues. If your library has successfully developed a = collection in language(s) other than English, we would like to talk = with you. We are ESPECIALLY seeking:
* Small =
libraries
* Libraries =
who collect in non-Western scripts (e.g. Chinese, Hebrew, Russian, =
Korean)
Ideally, the = session will feature teams from three or four libraries, including a = technical services staff member and a public services staff member from = each. Please contact me if you think your library's experience = might help other libraries planning to serve speakers of languages = other than English.
Please feel = free to forward this message to colleagues who are involved with = international languages collections. I can be reached at = <jingraham@worthingtonlibraries.org>. Thank you very = much!

A Safe & Healthy Building
Have you ever wondered where the hazardous places and environments
are in your library? How will you deal with these dangers? How will
you protect your collections and your patrons? Learn about surveying
your building as a preliminary step toward good indoor air quality.
Learn where the potential hazards are for your older patrons and for
your patrons with disabilities.
This workshop will cover two related topics: Indoor Air Quality and
Working with Disabled patrons. The first part will provide an overview
of the needs of disabled and elderly patrons and how ADA requirements
affect cultural institutions, looking at both the physical facility and
such basic requirements as ramps and accommodations, to programmatic
areas such as accessible exhibits and events. The second part will look
at surveying your building for potential indoor air quality problems as
well as security and safety risks.

Picture Books Plus! Art, Drama, Music, Math and Science Extensions
For Public Librarians:
Public libraries across the country are recognizing the importance of
making programs more developmentally appropriate for children by using
techniques incorporated by early chilhood educators and having more
opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. Many librarians are now
incorporating art, music, drama, math, or science activites after
sharing literature with children. This workshop will help librarians
with suggestions for hands-on activities that could be replicated for
storytime programs, for family programs, for home schoolers, or for a
program offered by the library to early childhood educators.
For School Librarians:
In elementary schools, there is much emphasis placed on incorporating
literature across the curriculum. Teachers need help from their school
media specialists with ideas on how to select the best books to use with
their children, and welcome suggestions on hands-on activities to use
across the curriculum. Also, school librarians could share some of
these stories and storytelling techniques or simple extensions during a
library period with students.

Dear Colleagues:
The Rural & Small Libraries Conference began as a = project of the Center for the Study of Rural Libraries at Clarion University of Pennsylvania after a successful venture with an annual bookmobile = conference in Columbus, OH. Last = year, the subject of creating an association with primarily a virtual presence, = was discussed. A steering committee made up of people involved in = previous years’ conferences was put together to investigate the = possibility. With Bernard Vavrek, Director for the Study of Rural Librarianship and = professor at Clarion University coordinating activities, we have created the Association of Rural and = Small Libraries—see mission statement below.
We have “taken over” the conference and = will have our first annual meeting and nominations for officers at the conference = on September 28-October 1. The conference is usually small. As indicated in a prior list letter, some of that is due to lack of advertising. The Association bulk mails a conference brochure to = every library in the United States. I know in years past, the one for my library never made it to me, even = when I was a speaker!!! We’re not sure where the breakdown is but appreciate suggestions on how we can better inform our potential = audience.
Below, you will find our mission and the conference information—it’s never too late to register. Join = us! We have a lot to offer and we know you do too!
Mission |
The mission of the Association of Rural and Small
Libraries is to enhance the development of libraries on a global =
scale. · To organize a = network of individuals concerned with the development of rural and small = libraries; · To provide an = opportunity for the continuing education of those involved; · To provide an = ability for individuals to exchange ideas and to meet on a sustaining basis; = · To enable = individuals to act together for mutual goals; · To provide a = source of current information for those involved; · To collect and disseminate information that is critical to this network. =

People are the most valuable of your enterprise's resources and are = also the=20 most expensive and difficult to manage. Unlike machines, paperwork and = other=20 tools needed to get the job done, they are people. They have feelings = and lives=20 outside of the workplace. In spite of their broad differences and = feelings, they=20 must work together like a well-oiled machine.
As you become a part of management, you will hear the words "do more = with=20 less" quite often. You may have to make decisions that affect the = quality of=20 life of your associates such as changing work start times, days of the = week,=20 reductions and increases in the number of hours required to get the job = done in=20 the most efficient manner. In addition to this, there are many laws that = guide=20 and sometimes restrict the manner in which you manage your Human = Resources.
