*Open Source Software for Libraries*

Open source and free software has been around for a very long time. Many
libraries, however, are just starting to explore these alternatives to
high-cost, commercial software packages. Open Source software can lower
a library's software costs, provide for more predictable technology
planning, reduce security concerns, and offer more flexibility to users.

In the past, open source software was used extensively "behind the
scenes" and rarely on desktop computers. However, several free and
robust applications now exist that can replace commercial operating
systems, Web browsers, productivity suites, and even full library
automation systems! Join us for this overview of open source software
and find out how it can benefit your library's staff, patrons, and budget.
