LINUX IN LIBRARIES

When/Where: Friday, April 23, 2004 from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM at Ohio Valley
Area Libraries (OVAL), 252 W. 13th Street, Wellston, Ohio
{ MAP: www.oval.lib.oh.us/find/ }

Presented by: Glen Horton, Technology Coordinator and Assistant Director,
Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium (GCLC)

Costs: Free to OVAL/MOLO/SOLO Members; $25.00 per person to all others

---Many libraries are exploring the benefits of using the Linux operating
system in their institution. It can lower a library's software costs,
provide for more predictable technology planning, reduce security concerns,
and offer more flexibility to users.

Libraries are currently using Linux with other open source software for
their
- Web/file/mail servers
- Library portals
- Automation/integrated library systems
- Digital libraries
- Web content filters
- Electronic reserves/journals systems
- Virtual reference systems
- Public access computers

Join us for this overview of Linux and open source software and find out how
it can benefit your library's staff, patrons, and budget. Attendees will get
hands-on experience with Linux and library-related projects.

In this workshop, you will learn:
- What is Linux?
- What can libraries do with it?
- What is needed to implement Linux?
- What is needed to support it?

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Glen has over 10 years experience supporting technologies in library
environments. Currently residing in Cincinnati, Glen has served as the
