The Reference Process: You need what? when? and how?

Description:
A reference question is often a multi-layered puzzle. How do you dig deep
for the real question? What must you as a know as a librarian to provide the
material the patron actually needs in a useful manner? We'll explore ways to
break down the communication barriers when dealing with patrons. This class
will guide you through the steps of the reference interview process and take
a fresh look at reference skills and patron services. For beginners and
seasoned librarians, too.
NEW: This workshop will meet at Westerville Public Library where, in
addition to the regular workshop, we will have the opportunity to observe
Westerville's new approach to reference service: the roving librarian
(translate: no reference desk as we've known it; librarians available on the
floor at all times). We'll then talk with the librarians, get their
impressions of the new service delivery, and brainstorm possible future
forms of library reference service.
Who Should Attend: Beginning and experienced reference service librarians
and staff.
Prerequisite:None, but think about your own reference interview experiences.
