LET NOVELIST HELP YOUR SUMMER READERS DISCOVER NEW TRAILS

Whether you are exploring the Lewis & Clark trail, a backyard trail or a
"family vacation" trail, summer is around the corner ready to open a new
world of reading to children and adults alike. As the weather begins to
warm up and children leave school behind for swimming pools, biking,
baseball games and family vacations, many opportunities arise for reading
about new places and experiences. In celebration of Lewis and Clark's great
expedition, many libraries from New England to Alaska have adopted the theme
of discovery (Discover New Trails at Your Library, Explore the Reading
Trail, A World of Reading, Discover New Trails...Read!) for this summer's
reading program.

Let NoveList help you and your readers dig deeper as they discover new
trails this summer.

BOOKS FOR SUMMER READING AT THE LIBRARY

Consider exploring Lewis and Clark's journey through a set of diaries, from
the perspective of York, Clark's slave, through the eyes of Seaman, Lewis'
Newfoundland dog, or through the experiences of Sacagawea, the Indian
translator. As of May 1st, NoveList will offer a new and thorough feature
article called, "Discover New Trails - Books for Summer Reading at the
Library." In this article, Helen Rosenberg offers a bibliography for young
readers that includes thirteen historical fiction titles on various
perspectives of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as well as a list of twenty
titles on related topics, such as wagon trains and the pony express from
both a girl's and a boy's perspective.

This article can be printed out and used for displays, story hours, hand
outs for parents and more. If you need the article before May 1, email me
at <mailto:lrohweder@epnet.com> lrohweder@epnet.com and I will send it to
you as an attachment.

The author of this article, Helen Rosenberg has been a Children's Librarian
for almost 20 years. She has worked in both public and school libraries. She
has reviewed children's and YA books for Booklist for 7 years. She currently
works as the school librarian at an elementary school serving children from
K - 8th grades.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT NOVELIST'S BOOKTALKS

BookTalks are short, snappy descriptions of books designed to grab the
attention (and interest) of even the most reluctant reader. NoveList
contains BookTalks for many popular children and young adult novels.
Browsing this list is an excellent way for young readers to discover titles
that will keep them reading through the summer.

Take a look at the opening sentences from Bonnie Kunzel's BookTalk for Jerry
Spinelli's "Loser:"

"This is the life of Donald Zinkoff, from first grade to sixth grade.

Donald is one of the greatest kids you could ever hope to meet. He laughs
easily, he likes people, and he loves school. But Donald is not like the
other kids."

This is just one of over 60 BookTalks for children's level novels, and there
are almost 400 young adult BookTalks contained in NoveList. You might
suggest that your readers in these age groups browse the list of BookTalks
and read a few to develop a list of titles to read over the summer. You can
also use these talks to create engaging bulletin boards and displays that
will attract children and teen readers to reading the books.

To find BookTalks in NoveList: Access NoveList and click the START button to
go to the New Search page. Scroll down this page until you come to the "Read
about Popular Titles and Topics" section and select the BookTalks link.
Then select the link to go to Children's BookTalks or Young Adult BookTalks.

To find BookTalks in NoveList K-8: Access NoveList K-8 and click on the
Teacher Resources button at the top of the page. Select the link for
BookTalks on this page.

WHAT ABOUT SUMMER READING FOR ADULT READERS?

Many libraries sponsor summer reading programs for adults. NoveList can
help you plan for these programs.

* Using the Feature Articles section, select suggested reading lists
according to themes, topics, or genres. The Feature Article "Reading
Summer" also provides search tips for finding books set in certain places.
o Browse the Feature Articles selection page, where the articles are
listed alphabetically by title of the article at each reading level.
o At the top of the main Feature Articles selection page, click on
links to genre and theme sections.
* Book Discussion Guides provide support for summer reading discussion
groups.
* Use Feature Articles, Explore Fiction, or Best Fiction to get started on
book lists for bookmarks or handouts.

To get to the Feature Articles section: click either the Start or New
Search button on the homepage (or New Search button on any page), scroll
down to the "Read about popular titles and topics" section, and click the
Feature Articles link.

Readers might want to use summer to catch up on their favorite kind of
reading. Maybe they want to try some new authors, but don't want to get too
far out of their comfort zone (it is vacation time, after all). Or maybe
they do want to try some new things, but prefer to know something about what
they are getting into before they choose.

* Why might Michael Crichton fans enjoy Philip Kerr, John Darnton, Greg
Bear, Matthew Reilly or James Rollins?
* Would a Terry McMillan fan enjoy reading Kimberla Lawson Roby, Rosalyn
McMillan, Eric Jerome Dickey or Omar Tyree?
* How about Sue Miller, Kate Wilhelm, Robert Goddard or Jodi Picoult for an
Anita Shreve reader?
* Or how about learning something about that author everyone is talking
about, but I haven't tried yet myself?

NoveList's Author Read-alikes feature is the perfect solution for adult
readers whose favorite author isn't writing fast enough or whose fans are
reading too quickly. These brief and accessible articles discuss why a
particular author is so popular and provide links to several authors who
"write just like" your reader's favorite. These lists not only provide you
with a short list of new authors to try, they explain the connections
between the suggested author and the author the read-alike is about. Author
Read-alike lists are available for over 115 of today's most popular authors
(such as Nora Roberts, John Grisham, Jan Karon, J. California Cooper,
Elizabeth Peters, Tami Hoag, Danielle Steel and Terry Pratchett), with new
ones added monthly.

To browse through the Author Read-alikes in NoveList: Access NoveList and
click the START button to go to the New Search page. Scroll down this page
until you come to the "Read about Popular Titles and Topics" section and
select the Author Read-alikes link.

SUMMARY

Summer is a great time for discovery and reading is a wonderful vehicle for
that discovery. Let NoveList help your readers discover the books they most
enjoy reading!
