FICTION (AND OTHER "READER"-INTEREST) CATEGORIZATION
Dr. Sharon (Shay) Baker, DesignWorks2000

--Join library marketing expert Sharon (Shay) Baker, co-author of "The
Responsive Public Library Collection: How to Develop and Market a Winning
Collection" as she discusses what research shows on the subject of fiction
categorization, the actual practice of fiction categorization (including
principles for selecting categories, readers' advisory tools to aid in
sorting the collection, and spine labeling and more), research on other
forms of categorization (how the DDC handles nonfiction and subdivision of
non-book media, how book stores and media outlets handle these issues, the
effects of such subdivision on patron satisfaction and use), categorization
that works well with standard library practices (recommended schemes for
non-fiction books and different types of media), day-to-day aspects of
categorization, and a wrap up of suggestions for further action for
individual libraries and the field.
