Feel free to join us at this informative program. The Palace Theater seats
over 1,000 people - so we'd be glad to welcome you to town for our special
National Library Week program:

Free Narrated Slide Program Features Sears Houses:

The Homes That Came In A Kit

With Nationally Known Speaker And Author Rosemary Thornton

Between 1908 and 1940, Sears shipped out over 70,000 home-building kits to
would-be homeowners throughout the Midwest. Buyers could choose from dozens
of home designs depicted in the Sears catalogs of houses. The various house
kits contained more than 30,000 pre-cut pieces to construct the entire house
- including not only the lumber but items such as windows, shingles,
plumbing and electrical fixtures. Many of these Sears kit homes were
constructed in Lorain County, since the city of Lorain was the location of
one of the Sears sales offices in Ohio.

Come find out more about these Sears kit homes by attending a free program,
Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at The Palace Civic Center, 617 Broadway,
Lorain. The program will feature Rosemary Thornton, a nationally-known
speaker and writer about mail-ordered Sears kit homes. Ms. Thornton will
present a narrated slide program as part of her program.

This program is sponsored by the Lorain Public Library System in celebration
of National Library Week and was arranged with the assistance of Bill
Latrany of Coldwell Banker Hunter Realty, and Jane Karolak of Real Estate
Title Services, Inc.

Copies of Ms. Thornton's books, The Houses That Sears Built and Finding The
Houses That Sears Built, will be available for purchasing and autographing
at the end of her program. Pre-registration is required by calling the
Lorain Public Library System at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 247.

As part of the program, Lorain Public Library System staff will show photos
of Sears homes that have been identified in Lorain County. Anyone who knows
the location of Sears homes in the area, is asked to call Valerie Smith,
public services coordinator, at the Lorain Public Library System's Main
Library at: 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 254. Her e-mail address is
Valerie.Smith@lorain.lib.oh.us.

Although this two-hour program will be offered free to the public, realtors
may be eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEU) pending Ohio Division
of Real Estate Approval, for a nominal certification fee.
