Dear Librarians,

In January, I sent you information about the "Ohioana Authors" radio series,
which the Ohioana Library is doing in partnership with NPR 820 WOSU AM, with
a grant from the Ohio Humanities Council. The "Ohioana Authors" radio
series is now aired live on WOSU AM on Monday mornings at 8:50 a.m. rather
than at the original time on Friday mornings. Several other NPR stations in
the state have also picked up the series. Some are airing the program at
the time of their choice and others are only carrying the web site
information. You will need to check with your local station to find out
what they are doing and when, or, if not, why not?

The programs are short, only 3 to 5 minutes long, and include something
about the author's ties to Ohio, and the influence the writer and their work
had on people, the nation, or the world. In addition to the program, there
is a great web site www.ohioana-authors.org
<http://www.ohioana-authors.org/> with bios on each author, a list of
their work, the honors they received, etc., and each program is archived so
that it came be heard by clicking on the box, "Listen to NPR" on the web
site.

Last week, a new section was added for high school English/Language Arts
teachers. The Instructions Technology Services of Central Ohio, Inc., a
state funded, nonprofit corporation has developed an Ohioana Authors
Curriculum to provide teachers with standards-based lesson plans and
resources to use in classroom studies of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama,
science fiction, and children's literature. I thought that you might want
to share the information with teachers, students, and school administrators
in your area.

The literature examined through the series is that which has sprung from the
soil of Ohio and that is rooted in the author's particular Ohio outlook. So
far, seventeen authors have been featured, including: Rod Serling - Yellow
Springs, Nikki Giovanni - Cincinnati, Joan Chase - Wooster, Sherwood
Anderson - Clyde and Elyria, Charles Chesnutt - Cleveland, Karen Harper -
Columbus, Harriet Beecher Stowe - Cincinnati, Ann Hagedorn - Dayton &
Ripley, Katherine Ayers - Columbus, Lois McMaster Bujold - Mansfield &
Columbus, Dawn Powell - Mr. Gilead, Erma Bombeck - Dayton, Hart Crane -
Warren, Lois Lenski - Springfield & Anna, Ambrose Bierce - Meigs County,
Mary Oliver - Cleveland, and James Wright - Martins Ferry.

Upcoming authors are Mark Winegardner - Bryan, Alix Kates Shulman -
Cleveland, Louis Bromfield - Mansfield, Rita Dove - Akron, and Elsie Janis -
Columbus. Check out the web site for the schedule through July.

We would love to have feedback on the series and would enjoy knowing about
any book clubs or other groups that use the info on the site for their
programming.
