The Patron Records Privacy Audit: Why? And How?

Friday , May 6, 2005

9:30 AM to 1:00 PM
MOLO Regional Library System Training Center, Newcomerstown, OH

Scheduled Speaker: Angela Weiler, Onondaga Community College and Kent
Oliver, Stark County District Library

Registration is limited to 36

This videoconference will provide background on the issues surrounding
and affecting the confidentiality of patron records, most particularly
those records related to patrons' use of library materials. Suggested
guidelines for implementation of a patron records policy will be
discussed, as well as suggested procedures and guidelines for conducting
a patron records privacy audit in academic and public libraries. How
well your library is protecting patron privacy can be determined by a
privacy audit. Angela Weiler is the Circulation and Public Services
Librarian for Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York. She has
been a member of the State University of New York Librarians'
Association for the past eight years, and last year she developed a
Recommended Patron Records Policy and Procedure for SUNY libraries.
Following the videoconference, Kent Oliver, Director of Stark County
District Library and chair of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee,
will join us with an update on the US Patriot Act and intellectual
freedom issues. Kent's timely presentation follows ALA's Legislative Day
activities.=20
