Do you present storytimes for Head Start groups? Have you used the Every
Child Ready to Read@your library tool kit with parents of children in Head
Start or Head Start staff? Do you represent your library on a local Head
Start advisory board or are Head Start staff involved in development of
your library programs and services? Have you received an LSTA or other
grant for a specific Head Start-related project?

The State Library of Ohio received a request (below) from Emily Sheketoff ,
Executive Director of the ALA Washington office. In preparation for the
reauthorization of Headstart, Emily is asking for examples of partnerships
with Headstart in Ohio communities. Emily needs a short description of your
activities with HEADSTART no later than March 4, 2005. Her e-mail is given
in red in the body of the message. I would also appreciate it if you would
carbon copy me on what you send to Emily Sheketoff.

We feel that this is an important step in securing library and educational
services for our country's underserved children and families.

Please feel free to call me if you have questions.

Thanks in advance for your willingness to help in this effort.

Sincerely,

Ruth A. Metcalf

Hello ALSC members and children's advocates!

The ALA Washington Office, is partnering with members of ALSC to get
language inserted into the upcoming bill to reauthorize Head Start. The
language will encourage Head Start programs to collaborate with their local
public libraries and allow reimbursement for expenditures accrued by
libraries participating in Head Start activities. This effort is ALSC's
legislative priority for 2005. Emily Sheketoff, head of the Washington
Office, Carole DeJardin, Chair, ALSC Legislation Committee and I would very
much appreciate your help as we mount this exciting effort.

In preparation for the re-introduction of the Head Start reauthorization
bill, we are trying to gather strong evidence of the positive contributions
libraries are making to early childhood education. The real stories of
what's going on between libraries and Head Start will give terrific oomph to
the ALA/ALSC message. Do you present storytimes for Head Start groups? Have
you used the Every Child Ready to Read@your library tool kit with parents of
children in Head Start or Head Start staff? Do you represent your library
on a local Head Start advisory board or are Head Start staff involved in
development of your library programs and services? Have you received an
LSTA or other grant for a specific Head Start-related project?

Certainly there are hundreds if not thousands of library projects all over
the country helping children in Head Start develop their literacy and school
readiness skills. Showcase yours by sending a short description to Emily
Sheketoff [esheketoff@alawash.org] by Friday, March 4, 2005. PLEASE
INCLUDE THE NAME OF YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS.

We can use any statistical data you have about the number of children in
Head Start programs that you've served. Examples of library/Head Start
partnerships that might have been more successful if you'd had additional
funding can be part of your story. If you've developed booklists for Head
Start or have written evaluations of library/Head Start projects, please
send copies to Emily.

We intend to put this information together and create an advocacy piece to
use with the Congress. The House committee responsible for this legislation
intends to take up Head Start reauthorization in mid-spring. So you can
expect to hear more about this legislative initiative in the next month.
We'll be coming back to ask for more help from ALSC members who can be very
effective lobbyists! In the meantime, if you have any questions or
comments, please contact us. Gretchen, Emily, and Carole
