Security in the Library -- Moderated Discussion

http://www.gclc-lib.org/ce/viewevent.php?id=486

      Date:

Tuesday, February 8th, 2005

      Time:

2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

      Location:

GCLC Office (PLEASE NOTE--New Office Location for GCLC)

      Speaker:

Barbara Bonney, Campbell County Public Library

      Description:

Do you have security issues in your library? Silly question! We all face
security issues. Join your fellow librarians to discuss the issues and
potential solutions.

Some of the general areas to be considered include:
--Theft, mutilation, loss of materials
--Internet
--Automation system
--Staff personal security
--Patron threats, disruptions (legal liability)
--Public sex
--Vandalism/food/drink

Questions that we will be discussing:

1. How does your library system handle loss/theft of materials?
2. Is a security system worth the cost? Does it stop theft?
3. What methods can be used short of a security system?
4. How much is a library expected to tolerate?
5. Do your policies address security realistically?
6. How does your library deal with electronic breach of security?
7. Does an Internet filter do the job and is it what libraries want?
8. Does staff get abused by patrons and how much is too much?
9. Do your policies address these situations adequately?
10. Is staff security something you expected to be part of your job? Is
it taught in library school? How do we learn how to handle these
situations? Are these situations on the rise?

Joining us will be some of the security staff from the Public Library of
Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
