This became a problem in my previous library. There, we had a policy
that no child under the age of 10 could be left in the library
unattended. So, we wrote language into the policy that staff could not
bring a child under the age of 10 into the library while they were
working because they could not watch the child while working and
therefore the child would be unattended. Children of staff age 10 and
older could use the library as any other patron could, but were not
allowed behind desks, in offices or using staff computers. Staff
members were told that they were expected to concentrate on work while
they were at work and could not be responsible for child care during
work time. Of course, brief family visits or touring out-of-town
relatives around the library were allowed.
We recently had to set a policy that relatives could not use the staff
room unless they were accompanied by a staff member.

Does anyone have language in their Personnel Policy Manual relative to
"bringing your child/grandchild" to work with you???!!!
We need to clarify that this practice is not acceptable and at the same
time "honor" the fact that the library is a public building.
