BEYOND THE NEW BOOKSHELF: GETTING READERS INTO YOUR COLLECTION

Based on circulation figures, we know that many readers come to the library
in search of a good book to read. Research also tells us that readers come
to the library seeking opportunities to expand their reading interests and
deepen their appreciation of the books they read. NoveList has always been
a resource that library staff and readers turn to when they are looking for
a good book to read, but NoveList can also help you help readers expand
their reading interests and deepen their appreciation of the books they
read.

EXPLORING BEYOND THE NEW BOOKSHELF
Your library has many wonderful books in its collection but many readers
don't move beyond the New Book Shelf! Helping your readers explore beyond
the New Book Shelf has never been more important than it is today given
tight library budgets.

Give your readers a reason to browse through your main fiction collection by
displaying NoveList's Author Read-alike lists on or near your New Book
Shelf. NoveList's Read-alikes are available for many popular authors and
provide your readers with five authors to try when their favorite doesn't
have a title on the New Book Shelf-or worse, their favorite author's new
book is checked out.

These one- to three-page handouts describe the appeal factors for an author
and provide a context for up to five other authors who "write just like
them." NoveList customers have permission to make multiple copies of our
Read-alikes for distribution. Consider making copies of the Read-alikes for
authors that are popular in your library and placing them in several
locations such as the New Book Shelf, where your users return books, or even
in the stacks themselves (for example, placing the Read-alike for James
Patterson in the stacks where the James Patterson books are shelved).

The author appreciation portion of the Read-alikes (where the author's
appeal factors are described) also encourages readers to think through why
they enjoy reading a particular author, helping them deepen their
appreciation of their favorite author. Consider some of the following brief
excerpts from NoveList's Author Read-alikes:

*	"Whether [Joyce Carol Oates'] chosen milieu is a gothic landscape,
the mind of a troubled serial murderer, or a family torn by events, she
pulls readers into her rich tales and provides a unique perspective and
gripping story in addition to incisive social commentary and psychological
insight."
*	"Readers of [Jodi] Picoult's stories are immediately drawn into the
lives of these ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Picoult
creates New England communities familiar to everyone and populates them with
residents readers immediately recognize - [...] and places her characters in
situations falling under the heading 'it could never happen to us.'"
*	"[Clive] Cussler is the quintessential Adventure writer; his books
convey the tension of a hero on a mission, marshalling the troops,
overcoming obstacles, and ultimately saving the day. To this basic
framework, Cussler adds just a touch of the fantastic."
*	"Suspense builds in [David Baldacci's] edge-of-the chair accounts of
sympathetic heroes and heroines in jeopardy, threatened on all sides, and
struggling to survive. Dirty dealings, often featuring the Mafia or
government bad guys, abound, and while political intrigue and corruption are
usually elements, the novels may also feature financial manipulation, abuse
of power, and corporate corruption."

TO GET TO OUR AUTHOR READ-ALIKES:
1. Access NoveList and click on the For Readers tab.
2. Click on the link to Author Read-alikes.

Note: Author Read-alikes are only available for authors of adult fiction and
are therefore not available in NoveList K-8.

IF THEY WON'T GO TO THE STACKS, BRING THE STACKS TO THEM!
If you can't tempt your readers to go browsing in the main collection, bring
your collection to them with displays. Again, research shows that book
displays increase circulation and help readers discover authors and titles
that they would like to read. It does take time to think up display ideas
and time to find the books for your displays-especially if you are creating
theme or topic-oriented displays.

One strategy is to use patron requests as the basis for developing book
displays. For example, when readers are placing holds on the latest Julie
Garwood romantic suspense novel, you might consider doing a book display on
romantic suspense. You can use NoveList to get a list of romantic suspense
novels, find these on your shelves and create a display. This approach not
only brings all of the romantic suspense novels sitting on your shelves out
into the open, where they can be found and checked out, it lets your readers
know that you are thinking about their needs and interests and creates
another reader-centered area for your readers.

SUMMARY
Matching the right reader with the right book is what readers' advisory and
reader guidance services are all about. However, providing excellent reader
service is about more than putting books in readers' hands. Libraries with
excellent reader services also provide opportunities for readers to discover
new titles and learn about themselves as readers. Libraries with excellent
reader services programs also realize that many readers help themselves and
do not seek staff assistance. NoveList can help you reach these readers by
providing you with materials that can be copied and shared as well as by
reducing the time it takes to develop and maintain interesting and engaging
book displays. For more information about merchandising and displays, see
Mary K. Chelton's NoveList Readers' Advisory article on the topic -
locatable with an Article and List Search for "merchandising."
