An Introduction to Anime and Manga for All!

Program Date: 10/17/2005=20

Program Time: 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Speaker:=20
Gilles Poitras is the author of the Librarian's Guide to Anime and Manga

Program Description:
Anime and manga have in recent decades become very popular outside of
Japan. In the United States, patrons of all ages - with greatly varied
tastes - are interested in this graphic material. In the US the market
has grown from a small, specialized, largely adult market to a large one
with all ages enjoying the extensive variety of what is available. Anime
and manga not only come from another culture but they are a product of
decades of change and evolution in the Japanese entertainment industry.
Today anime and manga include all the types of material one finds in
literature and cinema with a quality of story telling as sophisticated
as one finds in those other media. Even with all of the press anime and
manga have been receiving, very few really understand what anime and
manga are all about - even their fans.=20

This workshop will cover the history of the two mediums, the major
genres, gender specific works and American fan culture. Special
considerations in collection development, shelving and cataloging will
also be covered.=20
