State Library of Ohio announces MORE moratorium
The State Library of Ohio will not be adding additional members to MORE at this time. Please note, however, that because 140 libraries are currently members of MORE and because their customers are dependent upon MORE to meet their interlibrary loan needs, we will continue to actively support and improve MORE until we have identified the next generation of Statewide Resource Sharing.

While the current model of statewide resource sharing has been well-received by library customers, it has not lived up to the expectations of everyone in the Ohio library community.

In response to this, in Dec. 2004, the State Library Board created a Statewide Resource Sharing Commission. This Commission has met twice. In conjunction, a Brokering Task Force was established to explore possible enhancements or standards which would address the problems inherent in MORE. This Task Force has specifically looked at how the NCIP standard might be used to eliminate the need for library staff to enter data from the MORE system into their local systems.

These enhancements will be slow in coming (perhaps 1-2 years off); costly for libraries to implement on their local systems; and, perhaps most importantly, will not address all of the problems – specifically how MORE handles multimedia material.

When the Fretwell-Downing software was selected for the MORE project, this may have been an excellent choice. Today there are many more solutions and models available than there were then. It is time for us to consider these alternatives. To this end, Angela Thomas has been asked to serve as project manager to take us to the next generation of Statewide Resource Sharing.

Please visit http://winslo.state.oh.us/more/ often for updates on our progress with this project. Angela also may be contacting you for information along the way. Responding to her requests in a timely fashion will keep this project moving forward.

Contact Angela at athomas at sloma.state.oh.us with any questions.
