Do you allow patrons to access their e-mail from your internet computers?
There is a discussion going on here between the director, staff and board

We do allow patrons to access their e-mail accounts. The advantage of
e-mail like Yahoo mail is that it can be accessed from any computer,
anywhere, and we have many people who are "just passing through" who
need to stay in touch. Frankly, e-mail is one of the least of our
problems. For many people, e-mail is almost as archaic as writing a
letter. Spam and other assorted evils have made e-mail annoying, and
young people are more likely to use IM. But, people need e-mail
addresses to order from Amazon, create job applications, and myriad
other things.

Good luck!

That is probably one of the biggest draws for our patrons. The ability to access their e-mail. We do not allow them to setup Outlook Express or any other e-mail client though. If they can't get it in a web browser...........sorry.

Oops! I meant to reply to the whole list - yes, we certainly do! Even
though we don't provide email addresses for patrons, we do allow them to
check their email from the patron computers. This happens frequently when
folks are having trouble with their home computers, or they are travelling
through, or just because our computers are faster.

Absolutely. We have many patrons who use our computers as their only
access to their email accounts. In fact, we often show patrons how to
set up an account on yahoo or hotmail. Especially for our lower-income
and many of our senior patrons it is an essential service that allows
them to job search, keep in touch with family, get needed services they
otherwise could not access.

Same here, we definitely allow email. We have handouts
on how to set up a Yahoo account, and reference staff
can all help someone get through the process. We also
teach an email class as part of our computer class
curriculum.

If you were to deny patrons access to their email accounts, you might as
well shut off the computers. Email is now an integral part of Internet use
for the majority of users and you would be severely limiting access by
cutting off email. I shudder imagining the rioting that would result from
patrons if that kind of a policy went into effect.

There are far too many legitimate uses in favor of email.

We definitely do allow our patrons to use their e-mail accounts on our public computers, provided the e-mail account can be accessed via the Web. We have security settings in place now that prevent Outlook Express from working, because we had several patrons who kept trying to set it up to access their non-Web e-mail accounts. But we place no restrictions on web-based e-mail at all.

As many others on the list have said, it is one of the primary reasons that our Internet patrons need the computers -- and as someone else pointed out, being able to access it makes so much more possible on the web, as well.
