KnowItNow subject queues now open to *ALL* KIN librarians

KnowItNow would not be the nationally-known success it is without the you,
the knowledgeable librarians who answer the thousands of questions that come
in every year. Ohio librarians answered over 130,000 questions in 2006
alone and the numbers continue to go up!

In order to handle this kind of continued growth, the KIN managers have
opted to open up the special subject queues (e.g. History, Business, Science
& Technology, etc.) to any KIN librarian who would like to participate.
Want to keep your reference skills really sharp? Are you a history buff who
wants to put that knowledge to practical use? Whatever the reason,
KnowItNow needs your expertise.

Here's the answers to some questions you might have:

"Aren't those special subject questions really complicated?"
A large number of questions that come in on the subject group queues
actually can be answered by librarians who typically cover General
Reference. KIN users typically self-select a queue based on the subject of
their question, not necessarily the difficulty level. For example, "When
did Columbus discover America?" may often end up in the History group rather
than the General Reference one.

"What if I can't answer one?"
If it is one you can't answer though, don't despair! The subject librarians
are still there. You can still transfer a question directly to a subject
librarian (and you can find the list of them on the KIN Provider site).

"Can I pick which subject(s) I'd like to help with?"
Yes, you can. You can help with just one, or as many as you're comfortable
with.

"Do I have to cover my queues at different times than I help with KIN now?"
No, we'll just add you to the routing for a particular group. So, when you
normally log in to cover a KIN shift, you'll just be getting calls from the
groups you selected along with the one(s) you normally cover. However, if
you would like to add a shift as well (and you might need to if you want to
help cover a special subject group--see the next question), we're always
open to that!

"When are the special subject queues (groups) open?"
Monday-Saturday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm
Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

"I have more questions."
We're here to help. Contact us (see our contact info below) directly and
we'll do our best to answer your questions.

"How do I sign up for another group?"
Easy--just email or call us and we'll get you set up right away.

Your continued participation and support is appreciated by the thousands of
Ohio residents who use the KIN service every year. Thanks for all that you
do,
