Holiday Season Big Idea Showcase for Children's Librarians

10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Tuesday, October 23rd Lawrence County Public
Library, Louisa

Wednesday, October 24th Perry County Public Library,
Hazard

The holiday season is fast approaching. The season starts with
Halloween and runs through Valentine's Day, with Veterans' Day,
Thanksgiving, Kwanza, Christmas, New Years', and Martin Luther King's
birthday, and more in between. There are so many possibilities for
creative children's story times and programming that it is sometimes
tough to decide what to do. Now you will have a chance to share with
other children's librarians your successes and ideas.

With the success of the Summer Reading "Big Idea Showcase" last
March, a "Holiday Season Big Idea Showcase" is planned. Each
participant will share an idea for a program, presenter, craft, story,
book, etc. This can be a description of a series of programs,
demonstration of a craft, the reading of a story, or other creative
holiday activity. This is the perfect opportunity to discover just the
right book, craft, program, or activity to fill your holiday schedule.
There will also be a discussion of the ins and outs of programming for
specific holidays.

The "Showcase" will be followed by the popular "Cut-up Party".
Everyone is invited to stay and use the Ellison die machine to make cut
outs for your holiday activities. There will be at least two machines
at each site and dozens of dies. Be sure to bring your own paper. A
list of dies is available from the FIVCO/Big Sandy regional office upon
request. The "Showcase" will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The "Cut-up
Party" will begin at 1 p.m. The dates and locations are:

            Tuesday, October 23rd Lawrence County
Public Library, Louisa

Wednesday, October 24th Perry County Public
Library, Hazard

The "Showcases" and "Cut-up Parties" are open to all library staff
regardless of region. There is no limit to the number of "Showcases"
you may attend.

Programming for a Tough Audience...Adults

10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Wednesday, November 7th Boyd County Public Library, Ashland

Friday, November 9th Perry County Public Library,
Hazard

Libraries can successfully create programs with adult appeal!
Children's programming has been a mainstay service for public libraries
for decades. Teen programming has come into its own, especially in the
last decade. But one of the most elusive audiences to attract when it
comes to programming is adults. Public libraries in Kentucky are
focusing their attention on improving their adult programming now.

Now you will have a chance to share what works and what doesn't
work in adult programming with "Programming for a Tough
Audience...Adults." The discussion will focus on the specifics of
programming for adults. Participants will discuss creating programs
with adult appeal, scheduling them, and specific examples of adult
programs. Each participant will be asked to share an idea for a
program, presenter, craft, etc. This can be a description of a series
of programs, demonstration of a craft, the conduct of a book club, or
other creative activity. This is the perfect opportunity to discover
what other libraries have done to create programs that bring adults to
the library.

There are two dates and locations for this program. Both will be
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wednesday, November 7th Boyd County Public
Library, Ashland

            Friday, November 9th Perry County
Public Library, Hazard

As the ideas shared in each location will be different,
participants may receive credit for attending both.

To register, contact Brenda Bailey at the Kentucky River Regional
office by calling 606-439-1531 or by e-mail at brenda.bailey at ky.gov.
