Pulitzer Prize winner to speak at festival

Pulitzer Prize winning author Timothy Egan will give the keynote presentation for A Spring Literary Arts Festival: Entertaining Dreams in McArthur, Ohio on April 18.

Based in Seattle, Egan is a correspondent and former national enterprise reporter for the New York Times and was part of a team of reporters awarded the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for the paper's series exploring racial experiences and attitudes across contemporary America. He has done special projects on the West and the decline of rural America, and he has followed the entire length of the Lewis and Clark Trail.

In 2006, Egan won the National Book Award, considered the nation's highest literary honor, for his book The Worst Hard Time-a history of those who lived through the Dust Bowl era. This account, which became a New York Times bestseller, is told through the eyes of those who survived the devastating dust storms that ravaged the American High Plains during the depression.

Egan is the author of several nonfiction writings, including The Good Rain: Across Time and Terrain in the Pacific Northwest, Breaking Blue, Lasso the Wind: Away to the New West (for which he was awarded the Governor's Writing Award, Washington State, 1999), and his debut novel The Winemaker's Daughter. Egan earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and holds an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Whitman College.

Following the presentation of the Linda Ogle Russ Memorial Writing Contest awards, Timothy Egan will offer the keynote presentation at the Vinton County Middle School on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m.

A Spring Literary Arts Festival: Entertaining Dreams is sponsored by the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library and the Friends of the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library, Inc., in McArthur, Ohio. The festival opens on Friday, April 18, 2008 and the last event will commence at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2008. All events are free and open to the public, except for the luncheon and community dinners. For more information, contact the library at 740-596-5691 or www.vintoncountypublic.lib.oh.us.
