Here's another library appearance by David Giffels:

Booktalk by Author David Giffels, All the Way Home: Building a Family in a
Falling-Down House, Thursday June 12, 7 - 8:30 pm, The Kent Free Library
Meeting Room

Akron Beacon Journal columnist David Giffels will discuss his latest book,
All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-Down House, his memoir of a
decade-long effort to restore a decaying mansion in Akron.

The book opens with the young columnist, his pregnant wife and their
18-month-old son combing the city for just the right house, but nothing
seems right.until he sees a Gilded Era mansion previously owned by an Akron
rubber baron. It has six fireplaces, servants' quarters, a billiards room,
stained glass windows, and a pond with waterfalls-and it's a complete wreck.
There are huge holes in the roof, a small colony of wild animals that has
taken up residence in parts of the house, and what seems like miles of
corroded-even dangerous-piping. It's a dump.and it's perfect.

ALL THE WAY HOME follows the funny, frustrating and sometimes heartbreaking
journey of Giffels and his family as they put the old house back together.
Their many adventures include nudging the elderly Mrs. Radner, who has been
hiding in the house with her cats for decades, to leave; battling the
wisteria vines-to say nothing of the raccoons, squirrels, and mice-that have
overtaken the attic; and even finding $14,000 in Depression-era cash hidden
in a bathroom wall. It's also the story of a young man on the brink of
adulthood, someone happy but still mystified by his new roles as a husband
and a father, a man who's trying to find himself without losing himself.

Copies of All the Way Home will be available at the booktalk for purchase
from the Kent Free Library Foundation, and Mr. Giffels will autograph
copies.
