Ohio Ready To Read---What's It All About??
An Informational Session for Directors, Branch Managers, Administrators,
Board
Members, Reference/Reader's Advisory Staff

Speakers:
Sue McCleaf Nespeca, ALA Every Child Ready to Read trainer
Ruth Metcalf, State Library of Ohio

Program Description:
The Ohio Ready to Read project is a joint initiative of the Ohio Library
Council
and the State Library of Ohio that was begun last year. The main purpose
of the
project is to reach at-risk families on the importance of early
learning. Public
libraries play a key role in ensuring every Ohio child starts
kindergarten ready
to learn to read!

Every youth services librarian in the state of Ohio is being encouraged
to
attend training along with early childhood educators in their service
district.
The training is based on PLA/ALSC (divisions of the American Library
Association) Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library Project. This
national
research-based initiative gives public library staff the training,
skills and
tools they need to contribute to the school success of young children.

This two-hour informational workshop is directed to those NOT in youth
services,
rather library directors, administrators, library board members, branch
managers, OR library staff (such as reference/reader's advisory
librarians) who
may occasionally help parents choose books for their young children.

The goals of the Ohio project will be explained along with an overview
of the national
training, so that library administrators will better understand the
project and
what is being asked of youth services staff to do and/or for those who
work on
the library floor and need to help parents choose materials for their
young
children.
