The School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University celebrated the grand opening of the Marantz Picturebook Collection in the Reinberger Children's Library Center on December 15, 2008.

Renowned author and illustrator David Macaulay was the guest speaker at the program honoring Kenneth and Sylvia Marantz and their half century of collecting, reviewing, and preserving picturebooks. Catalogued by illustrator rather than author, the collection chronicles the rich artistic and literary tradition of modern storytelling for young people and will be open for students, scholars, artists, and all who are interested in exploring this unique collection of picturebooks and their significance in literature and art.

Under the direction of Dr. Carolyn Brodie, a national leader in youth librarianship education and winner of the prestigious Scholastic Library Publishing Award from the American Library Association, and Dr. Greg Byerly, associate professor, the acquisition of the Marantz collection is another step in a long and impressive list of accomplishments establishing the school as a national leader in library education.

Through a generous $249,000 grant from the Reinberger Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio, the new Marantz Picturebook collection occupies 1800 square feet of newly renovated space and features compact shelving, display areas for rare books and collections, distance learning classroom, storytime area, and private study locations.

Macaulay said the couple's passion for children's literature is 'pretty obvious.' 'When they were talking about names for the new home of the collection, I had suggested 'The Kenneth and Sylvia Marantz Passion Pit,'' he joked, adding that he 'couldn't be more proud' that some of his own works such as 'Castle,' 'Pyramid,' 'Mill' and 'Ship' are part of the collection.

The Marantzs and their collection 'are a fabulous reflection on our profession,' Macaulay said. The collection's new home is 'friendly and warm ... it's just so darn pleasurable,' he added.
