[OPLINLIST] Friends group

I need some information for our Friends Group.  When they were established
in 2006 the group applied for their EIN but never went on to get their tax
exempt status.
They are now beginning to work on the paperwork for 501c4 status but are
concerned about the cost for filing for this status.  
Have any of your Friends Groups done this or could you offer any info if
there is a way around this.
