I'm going to have my staff update the library's website with the second temporary budget. I plan to include the fact that many library staff work at the state minimum wage which libraries cannot cut. In an industry where library staff have always had low wages, it would take major staff cuts to reduce our budget by 50%. Not all library staff or library directors make wages as high as quoted by the Governor. To suggest that staff take cuts is insulting as most library staffs will probably have to undergo layoffs to get to the 50% level suggested by the Governor. I think he does not believe that branches will close and small community libraries will severly reduce hours and staff.

When answering the phone his staff says they are taking a tally of what subject you are calling about only. One of our local coffee shops called and said they had 14 people there who object to cutting the library budget and the staffer said they would mark 14 calls.

In today's news conference, Governor Strickland repeatedly stated that he is awaiting suggestions, any suggestions, from the Ohio Senate. He accused senate leadership of playing politics with the budget process and that their inaction was hurting Ohio, its citizens, and costing the state of Ohio millions of dollars. He said that if the senate did not like his 2010-2011 budget "framework" with its call for "Video Lottery Terminals" and steep cuts with no tax increases, they ought to come up with a comprehensive plan of their own. I'm sure it will all be on the news tonight.
