State Library of Ohio Board Awards $678,796 in IMLS LSTA Grants to 8
Libraries

The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce that the State Library
board recently awarded $678,796 in IMLS LSTA grants to fund 8 library
programs in Ohio. The funded projects include: Columbus Metropolitan
Library, $55,700 to establish a digital museum of Columbus, entitled the
Columbus Memory Project; Instructional Technology Services of Central
Ohio (ITSCO), $103,164 to fund Phase III of the Literature Lounge
Project; Kent State University Libraries, $60,300 for the expansion of
TRAILS (Tool for Real-time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills);
North Central Ohio Computer Cooperative (NCOCC), $141,587 to automate 35
school media centers in nine districts across the state; Northwest
Regional Library System (NORWELD), $39,033 for a regional digitization
project; Rossford Exempted Village School District, $38,575 to train
Rossford staff as well as public library personnel and Bowling Green
State University library and college of education personnel on safe
Internet use and how to effectively evaluate quality content and
authority of information; University of Cincinnati Libraries, $140,437
to digitize the birth and death records of the City of Cincinnati from
1865-1908; and Cleveland Public Library for a Services to the Blind and
Physically Handicapped project.

The State Library administers the Library Services and Technology Act
(LSTA) program, funded through the Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS), an independent federal agency.

LSTA funds are used in one of three ways. Some funds are used in-house
for programs that further the goals of the Five - Year Plan, such as the
Summer Reading Program. LSTA funds also support a variety of statewide
initiatives, including statewide resource sharing (Ohio Libraries Share:
MORE), the Ohio Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled program,
library databases available to any Ohio citizen and the KnowItNow 24 -7
virtual reference services. The remaining LSTA funds are distributed
through the competitive grant programs (minigrants, full grants, and
disability grants) and special grants.
