Program Description:
Back to the Book is back by popular demand this will be the 10th year
for this program. The program will start off with Don Borchert, the
author of "Free for All: Oddballs, Geeks and Gangstas in the Public
Library," has worked in the California library system for more than
fifteen years.

His presentation is a light-hearted look at life in the public library -
angry patrons, the summer reading program ("Call it a club; kids want to
be part of the club - they dont necessarily want to be part of the
program."), emergency calls to the police, recent technological
advancements, teens walking around with opened bags of chips and
Slurpees, employees going bad, billing procedures for lost books, what
he'd like to do with people walking around with cell phones, and that
mis-understood, mysterious group called the Friends.

Next we will be enlightened by Greg Fisher of Cleveland Heights as he
shares his insights into Twilight, Vampires and the Horror Beyond. If a
patron loves Twilight, why can't you just give her an Anita Blake
Vampire Hunter book? Are all vampire novels horror novels? How do you
help your patrons who love horror novels when they're reticent to
approach you? Who will be the next Stephen King? And how can a library
get a copy of Brian Keene's Darkness On the Edge of Town when it costs
$175.oo?

Join Greg "The Undead Rat" Fisher as he introduces you to the wild
wicked world of horror fiction. Find out what horror is and how it
differs from Urban Fantasy. Learn how the publishing industry for horror
is different from other genres and why it can be so difficult to find
out what horror novels are out there. Discover tantalizing ways you can
get quality and award winning horror fiction and save your library
money.

Horror can be a tricky genre to work with but you'll get the tools you
need to build a superior horror collection without having to read a
single scary book.

The afternoon will feature Melissa DeWild, Collection Development
Manager of Kent District Library in Michigan. She will be discussing the
What's Next database on series and giving you tips regarding series and
collection development.

Lastly we will here from Thrity Umrigar, author of several novels
including her latest, The Weight of Heaven. Thrity will be speaking
about her books and other upcoming international authors.
