SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE!!
Youth Services, Librarians, and Museums -- A New Vision of Learning
BEGINNING SUMMER 2010

The Kent State University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) received federal funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services in 2007 for the recruitment and education of youth services librarians whose training would include an emphasis on the use of museums with children and young adults in public libraries. Funds from this grant are available to support five additional scholarship awards for 2010-2011.

Scholarship students will receive tuition scholarships through the completion of a Master of Library and Information Science degree (MLIS) with a specialization in youth services librarianship and an emphasis on the use of museums with children and young adults. (For the purposes of these scholarships, the definition of "museum" includes not only museums of all types, but also historical societies.)

This program will permit students to complete their degrees through a combination of one five-week on-site summer session (Summer 2010 on campus in Kent, Ohio), and Web-based course offerings, using innovative teaching and learning tools, during the regular academic year (2010-2011) and through the three-week 2011 Intersession (May 16-June 3). There is no need or expectation for scholarship students to be on campus or in Kent during the academic year. Students are required to be on-site for class during the 2010 five-week summer session (July 19-Aug. 21) and the 2011 Intersession.
The five scholarship students will come together to form a cohesive group. They will take many of their courses together and participate in various museum-related group activities during on-campus summer session as well as the regular academic year, including a four-day expenses paid trip to Washington D.C during spring 2011.

Scholarship students will follow a prescribed course of study for youth librarianship with a special emphasis on museums.

Scholarship students will begin by completing selected courses and workshops over a five-week, on-campus period in Summer 2010 (July 19-August 21).

Scholarship application and the complete SLIS admission application
must be received by May 24, 2010.
