State Librarians Report

2011 has been an exciting year full of change for the State Library of
Ohio. There have been staffing changes due to retirements, new hires and
internal promotions, new initiatives such as the ILS Consortium Grants,
the introduction of MANGO Languages and Ancestry to the Ohio Web
Library, and of course a new Biennium Budget, which became effective on
July 1, 2011.

*	both "inspirational and practical"
*	intended to raise public awareness of the importance of
collections care for now and for future generations
*	focuses on both the IMLS communities of libraries and museums
and builds partnerships and collaboration between these two entities
*	builds on IMLS' strong history of grant-making in conservation,
preservation and collection management. more...

KnowItNow24x7
2011 was an eventful year for KnowItNow24x7 (KIN24x7), Ohio's
collaborative statewide virtual reference service. The year started out
with a major development by introducing text messaging as an option for
patrons to interact with the service through a partnership with Mosio
Text-a-Librarian. Brian Leszcz (KIN24x7's Website Coordinator) worked
with Mosio to get the technological infrastructure in place. more...

Ohio eBook Project
It has been a huge year for digital media like eBooks and audiobooks.
Forty-two libraries joined the Ohio eBook Project in 2011 alone,
bringing the total of enrolled libraries to seventy-four. At the
beginning of December, the total number of new patrons using the service
was more than 42,000, just a little below the total of 49,000 patrons
using the service in the past five years, from inception in 2005 to the
end of 2010. more...

Working Together to Support Ohio Libraries
One of the unique aspects of working at the State Library of Ohio is
that we serve all different types of communities: state government,
Ohio's libraries, and Ohio's residents. Additionally, the State Library
serves different types of libraries: academic, public, school, and
special libraries. These library types differ in the communities they
serve, the way they are governed, the way they are funded, and their
professional associations. Yet State Librarian Beverly Cain found out
when she called representatives of the academic, public, and school
libraries together in September 2010 that these libraries have several
problems in common: funding, staffing, branding, identity, space,
increases in usage, and demands with decreases in hours, staff, space,
and materials. These representatives agreed that they could work
together to help address these common issues. more...
