Please excuse multiple postings...

While we received excellent applications for ILEAD USA, the State
Library of Ohio is extending the deadline to provide all Ohio librarians
with one last chance to participate in ILEAD USA. The extension offers
a special opportunity to those that were unable to form a team in time
for the original deadline.

We have made a few minor changes to the application process due to the
brevity and timing of the extension. If you would like to participate
in ILEAD USA, please send an email to Ashlee Tominey by Friday, January
4th indicating which of the projects (listed below) you would like to
work on. You will also need to attach a signed governing authority
letter
<http://www.webjunction.org/content/dam/WebJunction/Documents/illinois/i
leadusa_governingauthority_letter.pdf> . On January 4th, the State
Library will place you into teams and work with you to complete all
necessary paperwork.

More information about ILEAD USA and the governing authority letter can
be found on WebJunction at http://bit.ly/TxpAYo.

Questions about the program and the extension can be directed to Ashlee
Tominey at atominey at library.ohio.gov.

Project Ideas:

Choose to Read Ohio:

Choose to Read Ohio is a statewide program promoting Ohio authors and
encouraging readers to expand their reading experience through
discussion and shared activities. This group could work on a project
focused on exploring how you do book programming in the electronic age.

Ideas Include: Connecting with authors virtually; integrating Ohio's
New Learning Standards including (Common Core) standards into
programming for all types of libraries; creating videos connecting
individuals to the books and authors; leveraging note-taking and social
capacities of e-content to promote interactive learning and community
building

Digitization:

New information is often produced electronically and added to the
internet without a thought about the digitization, accessibility, and
standards. However, many older works are unavailable to those who seek
information solely online. This group could work towards increasing
digitization efforts in libraries across the state.

Ideas Include: Creating a self-paced training relating to digitization
and standards; bringing technology to disadvantaged areas; development
of scanning and preservation standards, metadata, and access points for
statewide digitization projects

English as a Second Language Services:

All Ohio libraries are experiencing an increase in populations in their
communities who speak a language other than English. This group could
use technology to help libraries better serve this population group.

Ideas Include: Creating a statewide catalog of community language
holdings by language, level and library; developing an online resource
center for librarians with resources such as Dewey in other languages,
training materials, handouts, translations of common library terms and
forms; creation of a statewide staff training program for cultural
awareness

Open Source Solutions:

Open source software has become common in many libraries, but use
requires willingness to experiment and an active community of users.
This group could work to create a community around open source software
as well as collecting and creating sample code.

Ideas Include: Online community for libraries utilizing open source
software; collecting sample code that has been created by Ohio
libraries; creating sample code that could be used by Ohio libraries

Revise and Expand the Measuring Library Services (1998) Publication:

Libraries across Ohio are struggling to accurately measure and report
their library usage statistics in a meaningful way. This group could
help librarians figure out the best way to gather and utilize their
statistics to best advocate for their libraries.

Ideas Include:  Resources for measuring all types of library services;
full definitions of library measurement terms; information on how to
apply and use measurements; self-paced trainings on gathering usage
statistics

Speakers Bureau Database:

Libraries are constantly seeking speakers both for their patron
programming and for their staff training. This group could design a
database or resource of speakers who could present to both of these
groups as well as include a rating or review system.

Ideas Include: Designing a database or resource and promoting the
resource; researching and promoting programing and staff training ideas;
creating sample programs and speaker introduction videos
