Some questions concerning the upcoming KnowItNow training in Cincinnati have arisen, and I wanted to provide some further details for everyone:

- Librarians currently staffing KnowItNow are welcome to attend for a "refresher."

- Librarians new to staffing KnowItNow at libraries currently part of the KnowItNow network are welcome to attend to get in-depth training.

- Individuals interested in volunteering their time for KnowItNow to gain some resume-building experience are welcome to attend. Some reference experience (or reference class experience in library school) is required.

- Libraries considering whether or not to join the cooperative KnowItNow network are welcome to send staff members to find out how KnowItNow works and to get trained, making a transition to full participation easier when the decision is made. (Currently, less than 20% of Ohio's libraries provide staffing for the cooperative service; however, *all* Ohioans are encouraged to use the service regardless of whether their local library participates in handling sessions or not. All libraries are also encouraged to place a link to http://www.knowitnow.org on their websites. We have logos available at http://provider.knowitnow.org/content/marketing-materials)

For additional details on any training offered by KnowItNow or any other aspect of the service, please feel free to email support at knowitnow.org.

Thanks,
Don

Subject: [OPLINLIST] KnowItNow Training Opportunity in Cincinnati

A free KnowItNow (KIN) training opportunity will be hosted by the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County (PLCHC) (800 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202) on Thursday, November 15, 2012.

Staff members from area public and academic libraries (either those currently participating in KIN or those interested in joining the collaborative effort) are invited to attend. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve your place, email your name, preferred email address, library, and which sessions you'll be attending to Don Boozer, KIN Coordinator, at support at knowitnow.org.

A "basic training" morning session (10:00 am to 12:30 pm) will be offered concentrating on navigating the KIN Provider Site and providing hands-on practice with the SparkRef virtual reference software.

An "advanced training" afternoon session (2:00 pm to 4:00 pm) will be offered and will provide tips on using Google, Wikipedia, and the Ohio Web Library databases; handling problem patrons and patrons with problems; and reviewing real KIN transcripts to enhance customer and reference service skills. There will also be time for discussion and questions.

Participants are welcome to come to either the morning session, the afternoon session, or a combination of morning and afternoon. Lunch will be "on your own" with recommendations from the staff of PLCHC.

The library provides free parking and directions to PLCHC are available online at http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/main/.
