*12/31/12.  Probationary pay $15.50 an hour; $16.00 an hour
thereafter.  Position
open until filled.*

*POSITION:                          HEAD OF CHILDREN’S (Department
Head/Management; full time, salary position at 40 hours per week)*



*Anticipated schedule:*  Regular operating hours of the library are 9am to
8pm, Monday through Thursday, 10am-5pm, Friday and Saturday.   Closed
Sunday.  This position requires a shift of 8am to 5pm on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Friday, and 11am-8pm, Thursday.   Includes a rotation of
alternating Fridays and Saturdays.   Hours are subject to change by the
Director.  Sunday hours are a possibility in the future.



*Responsibilities:*                 Manages a busy department and
supervises 1 full time and 2 part time staff members.  Responsible for all
decisions regarding programming events, scheduling, community relations,
school partnerships, and collection development.  Oversees all juvenile
circulation desk duties, reference, internet computers, and readers’
advisory as needed.

*Required                               *MLS from an ALA-Accredited library
school

*Education &*                        One to three years of children’s
librarian experience required

*Experience:*                         Previous supervisory experience
required

Experience working with personal computers and electronic resources

Excellent communication skills

Ability to self-manage and maintain a professional image

Must be able to work evenings & weekends

Ability to develop displays and public relations materials

*Basic Duties:                        Supervisory:  *Supervises 1 full time
and 2 part time staff members in the Children’s Department. .  This person
is responsible for training, supervising, and communicating the library’s
policies, procedures, and mission to all staff members.  Works closely with
staff to assure quality of work.  Communicates problems, staff issues, and
patron issues to the Director.

                                           *Scheduling:  *Responsible for
scheduling to best meet the needs of the department.  Responsible for
posting schedule and managing time cards of staff members.



*Children’s Circulation Desk:* Trains and schedules all staff members for
the children’s desk including circulation duties, reference duties, and
phone services.*              *

* *

*Reader’s Advisory:*  Assists patrons on the selection of materials by
having an excellent knowledge of the library’s collection and resources.



*Library Website:*  Responsible for the regular informational maintenance
of the library’s website in regards to services for children.  Promotes
library news, events, activities, and various links.



*Collection Development:  *Responsible for maintaining the entire
collection of materials for the children’s department.  These duties
include evaluating, weeding, and selecting materials within the assigned
yearly budget.

Juvenile materials include books, magazines, all media, computer games, and
databases.



*Computer-Related Duties:*  Offers basic instruction to patrons and staff
members on the use of public computers, Internet, databases, online card
catalog and trains staff to do the same.  Participates in public computer
classes by working as a team with staff to develop, schedule, promote and
teach computer classes for the public.



*Continuing Education:*  Shows initiative by attending workshops and
special interest groups to keep apprised of new technology, methods, etc.



*Committee Work:*  Serves on various library-related committees through the
year at the Director’s request.  Participates in community events such as
the Annual Old Canal Days Festival, Clinton Applefest, and Christmas on the
Canal as a library representative.  Assists in the Strategic Planning
process and the implementation of designated goals.

*Specific Duties:                   Programming:*  Responsible for and
oversees staff in the planning, promotion, and implementation of all
children’s programs.  This includes in-house and outreach.



*Local School Connection:  *Acts as a liaison to the local elementary
schools, meets on a regular basis with school officials, conducts monthly
classroom visits, collaborates with the schools regarding special programs.



*Teacher Loans:  *Promotes, coordinates, and prepares automatic teacher
loans for local schools.



*Summer Reading Program:  *Responsible for preparing, promoting and
launching the Summer Reading Program.  These duties include collaborating
with the national theme, ordering materials, and booking programs for the
duration of the program.



*Bookworm Club:  *Responsible for organizing and presenting a monthly book
discussion  for school-age children.



*After School Skills Series:  *Prepares, promotes, and launches an After
School Series for school age children twice/year.
