Ohio Library Snapshot Day 2012 is just around the corner!

Between October 7 – 13, 2012 , all types of Ohio libraries are encouraged to pick one day to collect and share photographs, stories, and information to tell the story of libraries on a typical day.
Last year was the first time in Ohio that public, school, academic, and special libraries joined together for Snapshot Day. Between November 13 and 19, 2011 libraries across Ohio participated in the American Library Association's Snapshot Day initiative. 233 Ohio Libraries participated by either completing the survey or uploading photos to Flickr, or both.
The goal for 2012 is to increase participation by 50% for each of the type of libraries. We need your help to reach this goal. The Snapshot Day planning committee reviewed the 2011 process, results, feedback and suggestions, and incorporated them into the 2012 project. The toolkit with step-by-step instructions and tips has been updated to make it easy for libraries to participate. The State Library of Ohio will use the pictures and stories collected during Snapshot Day to create a statewide snapshot of what happens on libraries each day in Ohio. Libraries are encouraged to use their pictures and stories for their own advocacy and promotion efforts.
Top 5 reasons to participate in Library Snapshot Day 2012:
5. Gives your library a chance to collect anecdotal evidence that shows how libraries are a transformational force in people’s lives.
4. Sharing stories from library users creates a powerful message, raises awareness, and shows community leaders, legislators, and the public how you benefit the community.
3. Increases staff morale by showing that the library does positively impact community members and that the work they do matters.
2. Highlights the importance of the library as an valuable community center that provides equal access to resources vital for thriving in today’s digital world.
And the biggest reason to participate in Library Snapshot Day 2012:
1. Gives you a reason to contact your elected officials to visit your library and share your library’s story just in time for the creation of the next biennial budget.

Snapshot Day: A Day in the Life of Ohio Libraries is a project of the State Library of Ohio, the Ohio Library Council, OPLIN, the Academic Library Association of Ohio, OhioLINK, the Ohio Educational Library Media Association, and INFOhio. Each year, Ohio libraries will participate in this advocacy effort by collecting photographs, stories, information, and comments to get a snapshot of a typical day in Ohio libraries. All types of libraries are encouraged to participate to showcase what libraries do for Ohio residents.
