*Spring Literary Arts Festival commemorates the 150**th **anniversary of 
the American Civil War*

"North and South: A House Divided," the 9th annual Spring Literary Arts 
Festival sponsored by the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library and the 
Friends of the Library in McArthur, Ohio, will feature a diverse program 
in April to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

Main events will begin on Friday, April 5th with a riverboat casino 
night aboard the /Iron Belle/ and a nostalgic visit to the 1860s, 
complete with games (roulette, blackjack, and poker), food, a cash bar, 
and music provided by Dan Daly and the Sodbusters 
(http://thesodbusters.com/Sodbusters.html) in the McArthur VFW hall. 
Period costumes are encouraged but not required. Tickets will be on sale 
at the library and at the door. Admission is $5.00 per person.

Saturday, April 6th events will emphasize the writing contest awards 
ceremony and keynote presentations by James Downs, Ph.D., Associate 
Professor of History, Connecticut College

author of /Sick from Freedom: African-American Illness and Suffering 
during the Civil War and Reconstruction /and Ronald S. Coddington, 
contributing author for the /New York Times /and Assistant Managing

the Civil War: An Album of Union Soldiers and Their Stories, Faces of 
the Confederacy: An Album of Southern Soldiers and Their Stories, /and 
/African American Faces of War: An Album 
/(http://www.roncoddington.com/). These events begin at 12:30 p.m. in 
the meeting room of the library.

On Sunday, April 7th at 2:00 p.m., the Vinton County Women's Chorus will 
present an American Civil War Choral Concert in Trinity Episcopal 
Church, featuring selections from spirituals, hymns, and popular parlor 
and battle songs of the era.

Sally Shearer, past president of the Friends of the Library, will 
moderate a book discussion on Wednesday, April 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the 
library meeting room. The discussion will focus on /Civil War Stories 
/by Ambrose Bierce, an American journalist and short story writer and 
native of Meigs County, Ohio.

There will be a screening of the film /Lincoln///by Steven Spielberg in 
the library on Thursday, April 11th at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Vinton County Middle School, 
Bob Bence, Kendra Ward, and several of their musical friends will 
provide entertainment for a Civil War Ball (http://www.dulcimertimes.com 
<http://www.dulcimertimes.com/>). Jean Hilton, otherwise known as "Miz 
Rosebud," will call the dances. Period costumes are encouraged but not 
required. Admission is free. (In preparation for the ball, a free dance 
class will be held on March 26th at 6:30 pm in the library meeting room.)

Closing out the 2013 festival, the Friends of the Library and the 
Friends' Community Players will present a "Civil War Vaudeville Show," 
showcasing local entertainment, on Friday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m. in 
the Vinton County Middle School. Tickets for the show will be on sale at 
the library and at the door. Admission is $5.00 per person.
