Kent State SLIS advances in U.S. News & World Report rankings; youth services now in top 10

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University has moved up in the rankings of the nation's top schools of library and information studies, according to the latest edition (2014) of U.S. News and World Report's "Best Graduate Schools." Kent State SLIS is now ranked overall at #18 (up from #20). The school's Services for Children and Youth program now ranks in the top 10 (at #10, up from #13). Annual Virginia Hamilton Conference Features Authors Angela Johnson, Gary Schmidt and Yuyi Morales

Kent State University's 29th Annual Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth will be held on the evening of Thursday, April 4, 2013, and all day on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Kent Student Center. The conference provides a forum for discussion of multicultural themes and issues in literature for children and young adults. "Dreams and Promises: Multicultural Literature and the Common Core" is the theme for this year's conference, which features the remarkable Angela Johnson, the talented Gary Schmidt and the amazing illustrator Yuyi Morales. Registration Opens for Third International Conference on Information and Religion
The Center for the Study of Information and Religion (CSIR) at Kent State University will host its Third Annual International Conference on Information and Religion on June 19-22 in Charlotte, N.C., in conjunction with the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) 2013 Annual Conference. CSIR participants will have the opportunity to take full advantage of the ATLA and CSIR sessions and activities at a reduced registration rate of $200; registration instructions are on the CSIR conference Web page: http://www.kent.edu/slis/research/csir/annual-conference-on-information-and-religion.cfm. "The Social Construction of Religious Knowledge," this year's conference theme, is explored in more than 20 papers and posters. Keynote speaker for this year's conference is Peter Ochs, Ph.D., Edgar M. International LIS Scholars Collaborate on Research
A visiting scholar from China is working to build stronger collaborations between his home institution and Kent State University's School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). Shengli Deng, Ph.D., from Wuhan University's School of Information Management in China, will be conducting research here for a year while also working on ongoing projects in China. Deng is an associate professor and deputy director of the Department of Information Management at Wuhan University. His visit is funded by the Chinese Education Department. Spend Two Weeks Exploring Museums in Florence, Italy!
The Museum Origins course offered by the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University is now accepting applications for the eight-week, summer 2013 class, which includes two weeks in Florence, Italy, visiting museums and learning about the collectors and collections from which they evolved. The deadline to apply for this course has been extended to April 1, 2013. Admission to the course is competitive; only 15 students will be accepted. Recent faculty publications and presentations
An article by Goodyear Professor of Knowledge Management Denise Bedford, Ph.D., titled "Expanding the Definition and Measurement of Knowledge Economy: Integrating Triple Bottom Line Factors into Knowledge Economy Index Models and Methodologies" was published in the February 2013 issue of the Journal of Modern Accounting and Auditing.
Goodyear Professor of Knowledge Management Denise Bedford, Ph.D., presented two papers at the 19th Annual International Deming Research Seminar on Feb. 25 and 26, 2013, in New York City: "Semantic Representation of W. Edward Deming's Leadership Qualities for Self Evaluation of Leadership Competence" and "Cities as Knowledge Systems: Application of W. Edward Deming's Systems Thinking."
SLIS Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., and Goodyear Professor of Knowledge Management Denise Bedford, Ph.D., were among the organizers of a workshop titled "Semantic Search: Magnet for the Needle in the Search Haystack," a one-day  NKOS/CENDI Workshop held in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Department of Transportation Media Center on December 6, 2012. Alumni News and Updates
Jessica DeCaro, M.L.I.S. '09, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is now the assistant user services librarian at Case Western Reserve University in the Cleveland Health Science Libraries. She provides reference and information fluency instruction at the Health Center Library.
Nicole Hollon, M.L.I.S. '11, of Austin, Texas, was hired full-time in October 2012 as a records management specialist for the University of Texas at Austin.
Jessica Hudson, M.L.I.S. '02, of Akron, Ohio, has been named director of development, oncology, for the Summa Foundation in Akron, Ohio. Previously she worked in Corporate and Foundation Relations at Kent State University.
Steve Kemple, M.L.I.S. '12, of Cincinnati, Ohio, music reference librarian, Popular Library Department, Main Branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, was featured in Library Journal this month in the first of a two-part article. (See http://reviews.libraryjournal.com/2013/03/media/music/music-for-the-masses-music-clubs-part-1-march-2013/. He'll also be in the second part of the article in the next issue.) The article is about a program series he has been running since November called "Listen to This!" as well as similar programs at several other libraries. Kemple's local alternative newspaper also did a story on the most recent instance of that series, which featured music from North Korea http://www.citybeat.com/cincinnati/blog-4464-come_hear_your_favorite_north_korean_folk_songs_at.html. He also has been interviewed by Paste Magazine about his Experimental Music at the Library series.
LeeAnn McNabb, M.L.I.S. '12, of Cincinnati, Ohio, reference librarian in the Popular Library Department at the Main Branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, was featured in a March 19 article on the Library as Incubator Project website for her role in organizing the first ever Cincinnati Library Comic Con series.http://www.libraryasincubatorproject.org/?p=9405
IAKM Alumnus Edwin K. Morris, M.S. '12 (Knowledge Management), of Sierra Vista, Ariz., is the author of an article titled "Culture and Knowledge Operations at the Learning Technology Directorate," which was recently published in Military Intelligence Professional Bulletin. The article was based on a paper he wrote for Special Topics in IAKM 61095 taught by Iouri P. Bairatchnyi, Ph.D. Morris also recently received Certified Knowledge Management Professional (CKMP) certification from the Knowledge Management Professional Society (KMPro). The CKMP designation is awarded by KMPro to experienced practitioners in the field of Knowledge Management (KM) based upon demonstration of practical application of knowledge management.
