[OPLINLIST] AWE Computer Input Needed

It’s a nice turn-key solution and matches the Early Literacy PCs in terms of functionality. I have no complaints on workmanship. There seems to be wide array of software on version 11 and I’m sure kids will find something to enjoy.

We’re still evaluating, but the concerns I have aren’t really technical. I’d love to be able to hand over one of these tablets to a small child with their parent to allow them to play at the desk/chair/furniture of their choice. On the other hand, the tablet is a little heavy for kids and the surfaces (including the back of the case) are pretty slick. While I haven’t looked at any specs, I don’t trust that the provided case will survive much of a drop.

The solutions I’ve heard to this issue usually include tethering or locking down the device, which feels like mobile technology death to me. At the point you tie the user down, why not just go with the PC version? If you want kids to be able to use the device by themselves, the Early Literacy PCs would require less oversight with reduced wear and tear on the technology. However, some of our branches are space-limited and it would be great to have another option for them. So I guess you could say we’re still working out the use case for the tablet.

Hi Michele,

We recently purchased two AWE Early Literacy computers and one tablet. The two new computers are ASUS all-in-one PCs running the latest AWE software. They replaced older models running on Dell small form factor PCs, which never had any hardware issues for us as far as I know. No problems with the new units either, though they have only been installed for a few weeks.

The tablet we purchased for evaluation and runs on a Dell Venue 11 Pro. It comes with a pretty standard case, which we are considering upgrading to something more robust.

Hello Everyone

Has anyone purchased the newer AWE Early Literacy Computers? Are they more reliable than the older models? Ours died just when the warranty ran out a couple of months ago. During the last 2 years we have sent it back 3, maybe 4 times for repairs. I’m not 100% sold on spending the money on something that may wear out in 3 year’s time. (I realize that’s a long time when it comes to technology.) I've been talking with the REP from AWE, but I'm still having reservations.

The AWE is extremely popular at our library to the point that we've had kids fighting over it. If the newer versions are up to the task, that's great. If not, has anyone tried any alternatives?

Thanks, in advance, for your input!

Michele
