Apologies for cross-postings

At the Annual meeting in Las Vegas this summer, one of the BRASS discussions partially evolved around the issues of desk consolidation and staffing. The article below, a new edition of the Public Libraries Briefcase, an online publication of the BRASS Business Reference in Public Libraries Committee, addresses these challenges.

No. 31, 3rd Quarter 2014 is entitled "Help, I’m not a Business Librarian!" by Sal DiVincenzo, Information Specialist in the Miller Business Resource Center at Middle Country Public Library, Centereach NY. At this link:

http://www.ala.org/rusa/sections/brass/brasspubs/publibbrief/publiclibraries

you can find this and all the other briefcase articles dealing with a wide range of business reference issues.

This article is a great training guideline for those experiencing support challenges, and developing resources to assist those unaccustomed to staffing a business reference desk. It's also a good guideline for any library reference desk that staffs with librarians not schooled in business, but who eventually have to field business questions on their own, (which is probably 90% of the field).

If you like to write and would like to be involved in promoting and supporting the role of business reference and education in public libraries, please follow the link on the page above to the Business Reference in Public Libraries page, or  contact the current chair, Ed Rossman, from Shaker Heights Public Library; erossman at shakerlibrary.org
