POSITION - Part-Time Children's Assistant

 

 

Job Title: Children's Assistant

Department: Children's Services 

Immediate Supervisor: Children's and Teen Services Supervisor

 

Description

 

Under the general direction of the Children's Services Supervisor, with
wide latitude and exercise of initiative and discretion, the Children's
Assistant is responsible for a variety of tasks essential to the
successful operation of the Children's department. This includes, but is
not limited to, providing reference assistance, preparing for and
presenting programs, creating book displays and other artistic displays,
collection development, working the circulation desk, and working the
children's reference desk.

 

Required Qualifications

 

*	Must love children!
*	Energetic, innovative, and forward-thinking.
*	Creative, imaginative, and able to establish a good rapport with
children and their parents.
*	Knowledge of children's literature.
*	Understanding of basic aims and services of libraries.
*	Self motivated, organized, efficient, and productive with
excellent time management skills.
*	Able to make decisions within stated guidelines.
*	Able to meet, communicate, and deal with people effectively.
Able to maintain effective relationships with fellow employees, other
agencies, and the public.
*	Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
*	Able to stand for extended periods of time and lift a minimum of
thirty pounds.
*	College degree and experience working with children or
appropriate level of on-the-job experience with experience working with
children from infants through grade six.
*	Able to work nights and weekends as needed.

 

 

Responsibilities of the Position

 

Planning and presenting children's programs.  

Working at children's reference desk.

Outreach to community facilities, including programs and presentations.

Performing reader's advisory services for children's department.

Decorating children's area as needed.

Prepare teacher collections as needed.

Collection development duties as assigned.

Actively promote library service, programs and materials to public and
staff.

Working circulation desk as needed.       

Inform communications specialist of all programs and activities in a
timely manner and work with him/her to promote activities.

Attend training courses and workshops which are applicable to the job.

Perform other related duties as required.
