When performance reviews are coming up (and they always are, right?) the way to prepare for them is to pay attention, not stress out! They’re an opportunity to look back at the work you’ve done and look forward to what you hope to accomplish in the next year. Your Job: Described

Pull out your job description and read through it. Remember what was going on when it was last revised? What needs did your organization or department have at that time that helped direct that description?

If the job you’re doing is in some ways different from the job described, expect that that will be part of the conversation. What factors contributed to those changes? In the next year, do you think what you’re doing would change more, or would the job description change more? You won’t decide this, alone, but your perspective is important, and it’s something you should share. Your Institution: Assigned

Your position has duties as assigned, but your institution also has assigned goals and strategies to reach them. Another way to get ready for your performance review is to think about ways you can connect your work to the organization’s goals.

If cost efficiency is part of your organizational values, for example, talk about the inexpensive CE you’ve used or ways you’ve helped keep an eye on material costs. Share a time you helped find a positive solution in a difficult customer service situation.

Showing an interest and familiarity with your institution’s goals is a good way to show that you’re interested in the institution’s performance as well as your own. Your Questions

These are some fine starting points, but to “Hit the Jackpot with your Performance Review,” come to the fall Staff Training Symposium on October 22nd . Beth Rumple, Deputy Director at Greene County Public Library, will share an HR professional’s perspective on performance reviews and answer your questions.

Don’t roll the dice. Prepare for your review and you’re prepared to succeed.
