    * A Cincinnati library maker space 
    * Borrow tech from SWON 

	

Monday morning, the maker space at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County had its grand opening at the downtown branch. They cut the ribbon in front of patrons, staff and news cameras , then invited people in to look around. 

Having been there at the opening, I can say it’s quite a place! A staff member was with each piece of equipment to answer questions. Here’s a bit of what I saw: 

    * A laser cutter/engraver . Bring wood, glass, acrylic or plastic to cut or engrave, in fantastic detail. When you bring your own material, you can use the laser for free. 
    * A vinyl printer/cutter . Print banners 30 inches wide and about as long as you like. It prints in full color, and it can print onto vinyl that it can also cut into custom shapes. Printing on vinyl costs just a dollar a foot. 
    * Media converters . Digitize a variety of media, including cassettes, VHS tapes, 35mm slides, negatives and photographs. You’ll need your own flash/hard drive, but using the converters is free. 
    * A digital audio recording booth. Use a set of AKG microphones with a 32-channel Tascam digital recorder and JBL monitor speakers in this soundproof booth. 
    * Digital photography/video tools . Use Canon digital SLRs to capture images and full-HD video in their portrait space, which includes a green screen. Again, bring drives to store your images, but you can use the gear for free. 
    * Oh and 3D printers and other cool stuff too. 



The space is new, and lots of people are just hearing about maker spaces for the first time. To keep up with what’s getting made there, search on Twitter for the # cincymakers hashtag. Get inspired and come to a February training there or train online at lynda.com .

SWON has technology you can try out at your library. It’s not the full kit that’s listed above, but we’ve got gear you can test out with your patrons and staff. Check out our list of Tech to Lend to see what we have available. 

You can have the unboxing experience yourself, or you can invite Nathan out to set it up for you and show you how to use it. If you have a project in mind, that’s even better. He’s glad to get you started. These are great visits for Nathan, too, since he gets to see the tech from your angle.
