[OPLINLIST] Learning Express Revisited

Stephen, we're considering our options at Dayton Metro Library so we can continue offering this popular service to our patrons. If OMJ and LEL don't want us to point people to the OMJ website, what CAN we do to provide access? Is our only option to buy a subscription to LEL? This may be an understatement, but I don't think our govt officials had any idea what a can of worms this cut/ change would open.

Thanks for the heads up on that Stephen! Don't want to get into any hot water with that.

Well, now that you've done all this work, Joel...

Notice that "LearningExpress Library" is trademarked. Today, LearningExpress is pointing out that OMJ doesn't have the "LearningExpress Library" platform, they have a "custom content" deal through Monster.com. So they do not want us to tell people that "LearningExpress Library" is on OMJ. We're trying to figure out just what we ~can~ say.

To be fair, if I owned the trademark on "LearningExpress Library," I'd be pretty protective, too.

I've updated our library's bookmarks on accessing Learning Express Library. Since it is now through OMJ instead of our library's site it could be useful for everyone, at the least it may give you a starting point for making your own. Hopefully it can be of use to guide patrons through the new access steps come August 9th.

Learning Express is, in fact, completely there and available in OMJ if you click on "Access Learning Express Anonymously" from the page Stephen linked. However as was already observed, you do have to create an OMJ account to asave your progress. This isn't really any different than what we did before, it's just that now you need a complete OMJ account rather than just the Learning Express account. Once you are logged in this is what you see :

If you click "Visit My Assessments Page" under non-core tests you find the complete Learning Express product:

That should look familiar to everyone. :-)

On a broader note though, I think it would be a good idea if we all trusted that OPLIN did their homework and ensured that we weren't losing anything when they decided to discontinue paying for Learning Express in OWL, especially since it meant that the State was paying for the same product twice. I like EBSCO, but as a taxpayer I don't think it's a good idea to pay them double what we have to.

Addtionally, as much as we may not like the site as it stands, there is no question that OMJ is here to stay. It is the governor's project, so it will always take priority. That being the case the best thing we can do as information professionals is to learn the site as well as possible so we can help our patrons, and contact OMJ with productive suggestions on how to make the site work better. I've also reached out to OMJ for on-site training for my staff, and they have been very receptive to sending somone to work with my staff on how to use the site.

This is what we do. Let's show them how it's done!

There is a lot banter comparing the resources found at Ohio Means Jobs to those available through Learning Express.

There appears to be four practice assessments at Ohio Means Jobs plus many Veteran Resources geared for our veterans re-entering the workforce.

Learning Express, on the other hand, has nine learning centers with four or more learning resources per learning center and even more tests and practices as you work through the layers. The Learning Express resources address the needs of a much broader audience with ACT and SAT prep, exploring careers, Elementary, Middle, and High School resources, resources our spanish speaking population, etc.

It seems to me that the resources found at Ohio Means Jobs are a fraction of what can be found at Learning Express and thus can not possibly fill the void.

Is it possible that I am missing a link on Ohio Means Jobs that leads to more of the traditional Learning Express resources or is "what you see is what you get"? If not, I don't see how "our patrons will still have access to this resource, even if the means to getting it will change"

Wow, it sounds like no one will ever see LearningExpress again!

Remember, it's here, and will stay here:

What goes away after August 9 is this:
http://ohioweblibrary.org/db/lel
...and similar access points currently available through OhioLINK (which includes the State Library) and INFOhio.

Stephen Hedges has confirmed what I had feared, that we will lose the Assessment and Training component of Learning Express Hub as it appears on the Workforce Skills for the 21st Century and via The State Library of Ohio.

In a time when the governor and legislature is pushing retraining and improving job skills, it just does not make sense to drop this database. Our rural community depends on access to these training tools to hone skills in everything from computer use to studying for college prep tests to training for certification in a number of fields.

When we provide computer training, we highlight these resources and folks are thrilled to learn about them. We will be hard-pressed to find resources as organized and as easily navigable as these are.

If anyone has any insights to another resource (besides YouTube and googling for training materials), please let me know. I am very disappointed at the loss of this database.
Susan
