The Tuscarawas County Public Library System is seeking a motivated and customer service oriented library professional to fill the position of Children’s Services Manager on its administrative team. Located in rural northeast central Ohio, the Tuscarawas County Public Library System’s service district is 54,807 in a county with a total population of approximately 92,500. The Tuscarawas County Public Library System aspires to be an integral, forward-thinking component of the Tuscarawas County community, providing customers with relevant materials, innovative programs, and an extensive range of services that are of the highest degree of excellence.
The Children’s Services Manager leads a dynamic children’s and mobile service staff of eleven (6.95 FTEs) at the county’s main library, provides children’s collection development for the system’s five locations, serves as an active member of the system’s administrative team, and contributes to the library system’s presence within the community. The ideal candidate must have excellent communication skills and possess a thorough knowledge of Children’s literature and trends in library service to children and families.

Position: Children’s Services Manager

Status: Full Time Salary 40 hrs per week; some evenings and weekends required

Salary: starting salary of $38,480 plus benefits and strong commitment to continued professional development

Qualifications: MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited program required, as well as at least two of the following: 1) coursework in youth services  2) three yrs experience working with children in a professional setting ,  3) three yrs experience in a public library setting,  or  4)  two yrs experience managing people

Required Knowledge:  Solid knowledge of children’s literature for children ages 0-12 year; Solid knowledge of current trends in library services to children ages 0-12 years and the adults who work with these children; Excellent knowledge of social media and emerging technologies including digital formats; Proficiency with Microsoft applications

Required Skills: Self-motivation and ability to motivate staff; Ability to prioritize varied tasks; Ability to supervise others and to act independently; Ability to use evidence-based principles related to creating  and implementing departmental budgets and departmental strategic plan;  Ability to effectively network and represent the library to children, parents, educators, business, and community leaders; Willingness to be active in the Ohio Library Council including travel to trainings and meetings

Duties Include: The successful candidate will work closely with the Library’s Director and members of the management team in providing creative and innovative approaches to library services to children and families.  Duties include but are not limited to the following:

•        Oversees the main library’s children’s services, as well as the systems mobile service operations related to children; serves as a resource for branch children’s services operations

•        Supervises and evaluates children’s services staff; delegates responsibility appropriately

•        Plans and administers the children’s departmental budget including funds for materials, equipment, and programs

•        Identifies outside sources of funding and writes effective grant applications related to children’s materials and services

•        Establishes and implements evidence-based collection development, selection and weeding policies in relation to system-wide children’s materials

•        Plans, promotes, executes, and evaluates children’s programming based on sound child development principles, current educational practices, emerging technologies, and popular youth trends

•        Establishes programs and services for parents, individuals, and agencies and other professionals who work with children in the community

•        Establishes departmental goals and objectives based upon the library’s strategic plan

•        Advocates to library management regarding a child’s right to access library materials and services; educates staff regarding these matters

  *   Provides input to the library’s management team regarding youth services
  *   Represents the Library at community meetings and events
  *   Demonstrates a positive attitude and supports library goals and objectives.
